How to capture daylight in dark kitchen

Hi,I have a large open plan kitchen that is east facing with not much day light. We have a side gable wall that is south facing (currently faces our property side laneway). We're looking to re-do the space and somehow take advantage of some south facing light from the gable wall side of kitchen.Considering knocking a window into the gable wall but it would look out onto our side laneway with a block wall. Is this a crazy idea? Is there another way to capture light from a structural gable wall with (currently) no view? (The gable wall currently has some narrow glass block windows but they don't do much and look pretty hideous.
