Design Dilemma Before & After Living Rooms

Sitting/dining room layout dilemma!

We have renovated a flat and need to furnish it appropriately for six people so need enough soft seating and a dining table and chairs, plus obvious extras like coffee table etc...

I'm really struggling to find a suitable solution which is ridiculous as the room seems plenty big enough!

The room is 490 cm x 560cm with a central door on the long wall opposite two bay windows with a 180cm w central fireplace on one wall between two alcoves (100cm w x 50cm d each) with a hearth that then protrudes into the room by a further 40cm.

Could you try the tv on the wall to the left of the door and have one sofa under the right window and one opposite the fireplace….better flow and feel more open perhaps?

What a lovely room and great windows. Your issue is that although it’s a large room it’s virtually square so doesn’t lend itself to being chopped in half and your central door doesn’t help this. Also your rounded table and sofas don’t enhance the shape of the room and I would go for straight lines for both table and sofas.

The dining table could be placed in the corner alongside the door which would allow a larger sofa to be pushed a little further back and moved sideways towards the door. This would open up space for other seating in front of the right hand window (shame to cover some of the window but if you kept the back low I think this would look ok). The other sofa you have alongside the fireplace is too big for the space but if you had extra seating by the window you could perhaps replace with a swivel chair. The tv would need to sit on the right hand side of the fireplace so a swivel would allow tv viewing.

This would leave a nice space beneath the left hand window where you could maybe put a console table, tiny desk, etc to balance out the room and bring focus to your lovely window.

I like the idea with the pink highlighted edge. This opens u the kitchen dining space but keeps the lounge and study separate as you wanted. I would add bifold doors if possible along the back wall of the dining room to make it feel even bigger. Hope this helps

I see what you mean, It's a good idea in theory, however, practically, I don't think it's going to work, and you will end up ruining the nicest room in the house. There are no walls that remain unbroken by doors or windows, so where are you going to put units and unbroken worktop space. They can't go on the left as there are three doors. There's a door on the right, which although you could put a unit and a bit of worktop back right, it wouldn't be very big, and the biggest run of wall goes straight down to the glass doors, so you probably can't and wouldn't want to go straight up to them. You could move the door into the hallway from the front end to the bottom end by the patio doors and this would give you a better run of wall. If you put an island in the middle, 5' into the room to give yourself room to walk in and gain more worktop, it'll only leave you with around 6' at the other end for a dining space. However, i'd still advise getting a kitchen planner onboard before you start, as i'm not convinced the room is big enough to achieve what you want with the available wall space, and it stands a good chance of spoiling a very nice and elegant entrance to a house. The other big problem is the plumbing, there isn't any currently in that room, so you'll need to dig up the floor for drainage and almost definately that of either the utility or one of the bathrooms! I vote for keeping the house exactly as it is!

There will be plenty of room for you to have an Island within your Kitchen / Diner. I would possibly look into a maneuverable island rather than a fitted, to ensure that you have ample space should you cater to more than 6 guests. (I've attached a Layout).
