Forest Flow '23

Rooted in contemporary design with an organic sensibility, this kitchen blends utility and warmth through its earthy material palette and graceful forms. Conceived for a modern open-plan home, it seeks not to dominate the scene but to flow naturally into it, creating a seamless dialogue between cooking, dining, and relaxation.

This contemporary lay-on slab kitchen is finished in a soothing palette of forest green and warm oak cabinetry, complemented by weathered brass handles and a white quartz worktop, upstand, and backsplash. The natural tones and tactile finishes strike a balance between contemporary design and inviting warmth, resulting in a space that feels grounded yet sophisticated.

The open-plan L-shaped layout orbits around a uniquely curved island, designed to facilitate easy movement between cooking zones and the adjoining living area. An undermounted granite sink with a black stainless-steel tap anchors the main prep area, paired with integrated pullout bins and twin Fisher & Paykel dishwasher drawers for effortless cleanup. The range cooker and its curved canopy hood form the kitchen’s visual centrepiece, flanked by deep drawers for cookware and crockery, facing opposite spice and cutlery drawers with oak inserts for refined functionality. The 70/30 fridge-freezer and pocket-door breakfast station are strategically placed at the kitchen’s outer edge, ensuring accessibility while maintaining a clean, uncluttered appearance.

The kitchen’s defining element is its curved island, which softens the transition between cooking, dining, and lounging areas. Its flowing form encourages a natural, ergonomic rhythm of movement while visually bridging the geometric cabinetry and the softer cushions and furnishings beyond. The breakfast bar extends this sense of connection, inviting conversation and casual dining between lounging and cooking. Thusly, the island does not assert the kitchen as a separate zone but rather integrates it gently into the living environment, creating harmony between practicality and poise.

The result is a kitchen that feels both sculptural and serene—a space that celebrates craftsmanship, comfort, and continuity. Its subtle curvature and earthy tones create a timeless connection between nature and modern living, proving that true contemporary design lies not in contrast, but in cohesion.
