exposed brick - how to finish for internal wall

Hi there
We have exposed the stone chimney breast in our cottage on top floor. However it’s really dusty especially the bottom and have carpets being fitted! Any ideas on how to finish so no dust? Should it have a skirting board? Should we whitewash it?
Appreciate any advice -thanks!

I think you should have it repointed, paint it with Water seal designed for brick and stone….. and yes I would add a skirting board but paint it stone coloured.

I second Carolyn's motion to check out IKEA for a media cabinet although I feel you will need something around 30-36" tall with this particular TV. It appears to me that you have two matching loveseats or small sofas. Is this correct? In any scenario, if you want cozy, several have already offered thoughts that will help. First, although ideal, I do not feel that your cocktail table has to center on both upholstered pieces. You could center it on the fireplace and work from there, whether parallel or perpendicular. I agree that the upholstery needs to come forward and that the two large pieces should create an L formation. the chair should go to the left of the fireplace, at an angle. I know: Now it is partially in front of the TV. If the TV is on an appropriately scaled media piece, this allows TV viewing over the chair back from all seats in the room except the chair. At risk of being presumptuous, I would suggest that the TV need not be visible from EVERY seat in the room. Greys are definitely hot right now and I love them, but choose wisely. Greys combined with this intense red and black can plunge you squarely back into the 80's. Consider very warm greys, mocha's or green-greys. When you land your color, paint the walls, out onto the underside of the tray and onto the front facing edge of the tray all the same color. This will enhance the architecture of the tray and unify it as an architectural UNIT, enhancing the volume and dimensionality of this feature. As for the pale blue, I must say, I don't understand that at all in this room. (No offense mforr) Now, add a texture to the highest central section of ceiling. Think, grass cloth, faux finish or just a deeper version of the wall color. I agree with Carolyn that the panels are covering too much of your window and that you should consider losing the tie-backs, which are a bit cutesy. In a perfect world, or if you are up for it, I would replace them with something visually lighter, something with a large open airy pattern. I would make the cocktail table metal and glass or wood and glass and modern, even sculptural. (maybe a Noguchi repro?...) Large scaled art on the long wall, as suggested earlier and some greenery. You have a great foundation on which to build. Good Luck!

I would pick my flooring first. Then I would paint the walls. Then have a look at the room and see how you like it before you paint the cupboards or the brick. Do it in steps because I think your brick could look quite nice and I like your cupboards the way they are. Just don't jump too fast painting things that you can't reverse. It may be that you will still want to paint the brick and cupboards but better to see how things look before you do. You have a lovely space !

Need help with stone wall

Well we live in a flat on the 4th floor in Edinburgh city. So we loved the thought of being able to expose the original stone walls of the flat. You can see from the pictures that we had it done for the kitchen and lounge. Since everything of ours are modern, the stone wall really brings an edge to the design. And in the lounge, we painted it the Farrow & Ball Downpipe which we think really sets it off next to the stone. Especially with the mouldings on the window, the lounge has become quite a grand looking space even without any furnishings. And we didn't even get to varnish the walls as we liked the way it looked now. There doesn't seem to be any problems with the dust coming off the walls.

The lower walls are knotty pine planks (5-1/2" x 3/8" x various lengths) installed years ago. They were whitewashed a few times and now fairly white. Ceiling was recently raised (vaulted ceiling with 2 exposed trusses). My delimma is that I cannot find the same thickness or width of pine planking and it doesn't look like I will be able to. I wanted to continue this diagonal pattern all the way up. Now unsure what to do. Whatever I do, I want to make sure that one's eyes will continue to be drawn upward since I have lived with a 7 ft ceiling for way too long! I'm not really wanting to paint the drywall upper area white, but maybe. I generally like a contemporary look, but the exposed trusses just spoke to me when we opened the ceiling up. Not sure how to finish those either. Any ideas, no matter how far out they sound would be greatly appreciated. At this point, I am just stuck and can't finish this room.

It looks pretty untidy and unfinished. It will need tidying up by re-pointing and then sealed. This product sounds suitable, but I’ve never used it.
