Family Room Wall Dilemma

The lower walls are knotty pine planks (5-1/2" x 3/8" x various lengths) installed years ago. They were whitewashed a few times and now fairly white. Ceiling was recently raised (vaulted ceiling with 2 exposed trusses). My delimma is that I cannot find the same thickness or width of pine planking and it doesn't look like I will be able to. I wanted to continue this diagonal pattern all the way up. Now unsure what to do. Whatever I do, I want to make sure that one's eyes will continue to be drawn upward since I have lived with a 7 ft ceiling for way too long! I'm not really wanting to paint the drywall upper area white, but maybe. I generally like a contemporary look, but the exposed trusses just spoke to me when we opened the ceiling up. Not sure how to finish those either. Any ideas, no matter how far out they sound

would be greatly appreciated. At this point, I am just stuck and can't finish this room.

Hi Janis Unfortunately I am not in the Boston area - I live in Ireland! Yes there are red items in 3 of the main rooms, the kitchen, sitting room and tv room (library) - although we have pared those back now and it's not as overwhelming. thanks for all your help everyone, i really feel like it's made a big difference and am excited to finish the tv room and then refresh the play room. do you think I should move the piano to the sitting room? and would the jazz painting work in the tv room? speak later, thanks!

Actually neutral rooms are very classy :) And adding a hand-knotted New Zealand wool carpet such as the one I've pictured would add a lot of coziness and ground the space, while complementing your striped chair. Small accents of colour can be added in artwork and on new sofa cushions. The fireplace makes a bold statement in the room, which could be compromised by giving the walls equal weight with bold colour. I understand that this is your family room, where you will be relaxing at the end of a long day and watching television. Therefore a calm, relaxing (yes, neutral!) colour scheme will achieve that. The charcoal grey drapes I described above should have lining, and they will add to the warmth of the room at night so you're not looking at cold black glass that's reflecting the room back to you. The colour scheme you have now is actually very nice--it just needs punching up a little with additions such as I described.

Yes, we definitely need to see the fireplace before commenting! Actually, magnolia is a classic and maybe you're best to add colour in your furnishings/accessories, as you have with your new curtains. We need to see the furniture etc. as well. I have a room which is in the middle of two other rooms (one if which is a conservatory) so it gets no natural light other than from the off white glass French doors that lead onto the conservatory. The walls are painted a light grey and the woodwork is all off white. I have an L shaped grey let her couch in the room & as wondering what colour carotene I should out down to maximise the brightness of the room that tends to be on the darker dude because of its limited natural light.
