Ned's Beach House
Architect - EDH Group
Location - Central Coast, NSW, Australia
Year of Completion - 2014
Simple durable elements: concrete, ironbark and steel impart family permanence. Flanked by inconspicuous homes are spectacular lake and ocean views. The eastern boundary Norfolk Island pine is immortalised in an operable Cor-ten west façade. Stairs reach a "citadel" around a concrete blade wall which penetrates inside the garage and west pavilion kitchen. Whether concrete, ironbark or steel, each side of each wall is the same. Despite this rule, our elements combine subtly, differently in each room. Off-form concrete tie-rods respect a constant grid from basement to rooftop “Caboose”. Exceptions are the "firewall" behind a hanging fireplace and two "apostles" that define a central "Cool" court between east and west pavilions. Covered, enclosed patios blend inside with outside. Kitchens, even beds in this house are steel. Nothing pretends to be something it is not. It feels soft inside, but knuckles beware. The internal vistas are self-sufficient, the external vistas a distraction.
