Sandbar Residence

Located on a long pie-shaped lot facing west over the Sakonnet River, this 3,390 sf private residence gets its name from the long shoreline and shallow sandbar that is exposed at low tide. The site along the tidal river provides the owners with an ever-changing private beach throughout the summer.

The owners come from a Hindu cultural tradition and asked that the plan of the home incorporate traditional Vaastu design principles. The design respects recommended locations for specific rooms while also incorporating traditional programmatic elements and materials, such as a puja (prayer) room, niches for statues of deities, and travertine flooring.

The interior program includes a living room, dining room, kitchen, mudroom, office, puja (prayer) room, 4 bedrooms (including first floor guest suite for an aging parent), “wet” room and bath at lower level from beach, storage, garage, and exterior entertaining/living spaces.
