This space may seem wasted, but it adds dimension to the room and could be used for overflow eating space for a party with long tables. Like the simple beams and the angle of the roof line. Arches are great. Multiple rugs would break up the space better for a variety of purposes in each area. I could see a large chair for sitting or cabinets below for hobby supplies with great north light.
