Looks to me like they have manufactured the support from Laminated and Toughened glass (Probably with a "Sentryglas" inter layer) with holes machined in it to take the tread fixings and then capped off on the outside face of the glass with a matching sized piece of timber to give the effect that the treads pass through the glass. Very beautiful staircase, albeit a little scary!
