OJ, I don't disagree with your wanting all kids to have two parents, but that is not the reality and not something that can be regulated, nor should it be. For me, the goal should be to make education free for everyone, making it a more level playing field for those that want to take advantage of it.

In terms of a ”culture” of family, Democrats have in recent history passed more pro-family legislation than Republicans have (FMLA, childcare and child heathcare, child tax credits, etc) and the key one was the Deadbeat Parents Punishment Act that required fathers (and mothers) to be financially responsible for their children. No matter how much Christian conservatives try, the government cannot force traditional family values on its citizens. Those are personal choices by individuals. But the Dems at least have promoted economic incentives for families, and especially those underserved.

Unfortunately, future families are going to continue to be impacted by the poor leadership we currently have, not the least of which will be historic national debt. $40 trillion today.

I used to be a bootstraps kind of guy, pointing to one demographic that pulled themselves up in order to point at another to say they should be able to as well. But in time I realized that’s an oversimplified outlook, often promoted by those content with the status quo.

I’m no bleeding heart liberal and I’m not prone to suffering from white guilt, but when I look at how some minorities have been systematically held back for decades and centuries, we can’t just say ok you’re equal now, no more excuses. Especially when these biases still linger.

At its best, DEI doesn’t promote underqualified candidates, it ensures that there’s diverse representation from the pool of qualified candidates.

Does that give some people an edge over the cis white male when searching for a job or whatever? Sure, and I’m fine that. Giving some people a glimmer of hope seems much more productive than kicking the can by saying, ”Sorry, better luck to the next generation, hope they keep their daddies.” And don’t even get me started on reproductive health, which has helped bring teen birth rates to historic lows despite some people’s best efforts.

@KW PNW Z8 I went out to breakfast with my grandson and that's EXACTLY what I had! And someone else cooked it! Yummy, for sure.

Although we buy only local free range eggs, I'm not a big fan. I like poached or freshly scrambled on toast but rarely have the latter because of the amount of butter required. I would never choose the vile rubbery muck that's been sitting under lights in a hotel buffet. I really don't enjoy omelettes and can only eat a few mouthfuls before the richness starts to make me feel ill. And I hate the sulphurous taste of hard boiled eggs. I've been served egg salad in Germany but never in the UK. That said, due to trying not to eat meat Monday to Friday, we do have a frittata, tortilla or a fried egg on roast vegetables once in a while. I do sometimes make an egg sandwich for when I'm out walking. Mashed softish hard boiled egg, spring onion and as little mayo is possible.

Having said all that, I did enjoy this breakfast last week despite not usually even being able to think of eggs before lunch time.

This frittata wasn't too bad.

Goose egg and roast veg. I much prefer them to hens' eggs but they're seasonal.

Eton mess. But I don't really think of meringue as eggs.

Our mom was diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment around 80. Her concierge MD felt it was very mild and stressed that not all MCI progresses to dementia. As we began to see increasing issues with memory and executive functioning, the family decided it was in our collective best interest to move our mom closer to one of us.

She moved closer to me and into a lovely independent living apartment where she did well for almost two years. But it became clear her cognition issues were progressing despite being on Aricept/Namenda. Her primary MD was now a gerontologist who continued to order routine medical screenings but did not refer her to a neurologist until we formally requested it. Not sure what we hoped to learn but the neurologist said something important to me at the first visit. He confirmed the dementia diagnosis with the clinical protocol but recommended our mom have a full neurological work-up - MRI, blood tests, etc. He said "Your mom deserves it." And she did. If this were some other type of disease, we would not hesitate to confirm the diagnosis regardless of the prognosis.

Testing revealed a diagnosis of Alzheimer's type disease with contributing vascular dementia. This diagnosis helped us understand what to expect and how to prepare our mom and ourselves for her future. We moved forward with a more palliative care mindset. Our mom had no other underlying health issues and moved through the nine stages of Alzheimer's Disease as predicted. It was heartbreaking but we understood what was happening.

So all of that oversharing is to say, listen to your collective instincts, advocate for her as if she had cancer, heart disease or any other condition. From what you have shared, you and your family have reason to be concerned. And my guess would be your MIL is also anxious about the changes she is experiencing.

Wishing you and your family the best as you navigate the care of your MIL. None of this is easy.

This place is such a vast collection of knowledge and experience, it's amazing.

We'll continue to keep an eye on Mom, and implement some of the suggestions here. She has lapses in memory, but I don't think she's a danger to herself. She functions fine, and if I were to introduce her to you, you wouldn't know there are issues. You have to attend Thanksgiving dinner for that!😄

Thanks again.

i dealt with this for my grandmother. During that time period, my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer. We hired caregivers that were there overnight with the 2 of them. But there cane a time when we gad to focus on mom and moved my grandmother to assisted living. It broke my heart. She was diagnosed with Alzheimers and on Airicept. It did not help her situation, but it did slow progression. my sister and i were devastated the day we took her to AL. she told us dhe would have never believed we would do that to her. 🥲

However, within a few weeks she was handling it pretty well and as time went on it became her secure place. They were wonderful to her. One thing I will mention is that I went to court for ”conservatorship” in order to make decisions, handle her finances. i was already doing the finances per her request. She would have never signed herself into AL. You might want to talk to a lawyer and see if there any documents you might need.

I don't know.I've always read anytime I could since age 5. Under the covers with a flashlight when I was supposed to be sleeping. Currently I am reading two different books on two different KIndles. I am also reading a paper book on horse training. I don't speed read nor am I a slow reader. I stay engrossed in my book world throughout my busy days. Kindle or a book is always with me.

Wild - I also read more than one at a time! I am more of a physical book person and don't use a kindle much. But there is always an upstairs book, a downstairs book, a fiction, a non-fiction, and a car book, sometimes also history. You can never have too many!!!

murraysmom, especially in this forum. It’s full of floof topics, games, silly quizzes…

I know that there are serious topics here, and people use it as a sounding board which is great!

For real answers, and real experts, I go elsewhere.

murraysmom, your posts are always a pleasure. (I imagine that I’m talking to Helen Hunt) LOL

KW, thank you. It was sad to think a dog so sweet could be treated so badly. I'm still with the same vet that took care of him. He was always so upset being in the little examining room, so Lisa (my vet) took him out into the waiting room and sat on the floor with him and did her exam. It was so kind of her. I saw his chart and saw it had 3 stars on it. I mentioned that I was impressed that he got a 3 star rating. She laughed and said that was not a good thing. He gave the staff a hard time when they would take him in the back for any procedure. Once she started treating him in the lobby, he was fine with anything they wanted to do. Poor baby.

Theo of Golden by Allen Levi published 2023. Wonderful story. I picked this up because it’s a first book & I like reading author’s first books. This story is a saga - it’s a long book. But the story weaves through the stories of so many characters that it’s very easy to become engrossed in it. Loved it. Would be a good book club selection.

Finished Naughty Neighbor by Janet Evanovich and it was the perfect palate cleanser...short, uncomplicated romance with a crime twist thrown in. Very quick read. Definitely not for book group as it's far from sophisticated or thoughtful...just some fun.

Next up is another, The Chase by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg. Also found at a little free library.

I clean my windows using a telephone. It's less work than using a robot.
