With the walnut island, Shaker cabinetry and unlacquered brass hardware, I would choose one substantial lantern-style fixture in aged or unlacquered brass rather than several small pendants. A simple rectangular or elongated lantern with clear or lightly seeded glass would respect the age of the house without making the kitchen feel like a historical reproduction.


For an 84 × 48-inch island, I would look for a fixture approximately 36–44 inches long, hung about 30–36 inches above the surface. Since the room faces north, dimmable warm 2700K bulbs would add warmth while still providing useful light.


Traditional lanterns and handcrafted glass lighting have remained relevant for centuries because their materials and proportions are stronger than short-lived trends.
