About Us

Green Patio, Best of Houzz 2016 Award Winner, is a landscape design company owned and operated by Lynn Saunders. Specializing in creating beautiful, sustainable and functional gardens, Lynn will provide hands-on attention to your project, from preliminary design through construction. “Gardens for living” is how I describe my design style; we are lucky to live in a Mediterranean climate and can enjoy our garden all year long. I believe that a well designed garden will have strong architectural features combined with suitable plant material and will bring a “sense of place’ to the homeowners. Water conservation and sustainability have always been central to my gardens. I create gardens that are appropriate for our climate - a garden which is drought tolerant and can withstand our long dry summers without looking dry, hot and desert-like and still look lush and dense. Lynn Saunders holds an Associate Degree in Environmental Horticulture & Landscape Design, a Bachelor of Science in Business and Marketing and was a Critical Care Nurse and a Cardiology Research Coordinator. She is a past board member of the Association of Professional Landscape Designers and worked for Foothill College to design a booth at the San Francisco Garden Show. Always an enthusiastic home gardener, Lynn was asked frequently to help friends and family with their gardens. She was so passionate by the process that she left her career in medical research to study landscape design. Her enthusiasm and love of design are key to her success as a designer - she believes that the collaboration between an inspired homeowner and a professional designer ensures spectacular results!

Lynn Saunders designed and managed the installation of the landscape in our front yard about 5 years ago. The amazing thing is that the yard still looks great with her original selections 5 years later. She was wonderful to work with - very patient as she navigated my husband and my different tastes. She was really well organized and gave us a landscape plan and several choices when it came to plant selection. All of her plant selections were based on the individual placement in the yard and the amount of light and water that each area received. She is definitely a pro with excellent creativity, knowledge, and professionalism. Five stars without a doubt.

Lynn led an extensive and complete redesign of the backyard of our one acre property in the Bay Area from the Fall of 2014 to the Spring of 2015. Lynn approached the project with an intense interest in delivering a design that would meet our wants and expectations while satisfying the constraints of the land, climate and environment of our region. She is cognizant of beauty, functionality and longevity. The design process was iterative and Lynn actively sought our involvement at every stage. Her knowledge of plants, materials, and contract work was impressive and a large contributor to the project's success. Lynn leverages a personal network of proven product and service providers to make sure that her customers get exactly what they want, and for a fair price. These skills and her network were particularly pertinent to our project, which involved the renovation of a pool in addition to more standard landscape redesign requirements. In the end, we found that Lynn's intense focus to detail means that when working with her, you receive a full-service job as opposed to simply just a design. She's a designer, project manager, and even works with you when the job is done to ensure that you have all the tools and knowledge needed to maintain a beautiful, functional outdoor space.

I really wanted a beautifully laid out drought tolerant front and backyard landscape, so I hired Lynn Saunders of Green Patio Design to design the landscape and bring in an excellent team of landscape professionals to put it all together. The design featured a large variety of Mediterranean and native plants, stone pathway, a custom-built fire pit, and a gravel parking space. I liked that we could reuse our boulders and healthy plants, and that the trees were all reshaped by a fine arborist. Lynn also helped with getting our water rebate for lawn replacement and smart sprinkler system submitted. We absolutely love the results and personal attention from Lynn to keep our new landscaping alive in the autumn heat and now into the cool season. Lynn really knows her horticulture and how to build her clients' vision.

Lynn helped us create a gorgeous, lush Bali themed backyard. She transformed our dated backyard into a wonderful entrainment space that we have enjoy daily. With her knowledge of plants and hardscape, we now have our own sanctuary complete with a custom Bali bench around the firepit and secluded hot tub for cold evenings. Throughout the seasons and as the plants grow in, our garden still looks beautiful several years later. Lynn continues to be proactive in our garden, stopping by frequently to make sure everything looks healthy and to provide advice to our maintenance crew. Her guidance and knowledge influenced our decision this year to upgrade our ancient sprinkler control systems. Lynn is very environmentally conscious and provided advice on how to tune our irrigation for the drought here in California.

This is the second time we hired Lynn, and once again she has exceeded our expectations. About a year and a half ago, Lynn created a plan for a waterwise garden in our backyard. We first met so she could get a sense of what we were looking for as well as a sense of the space, then presented a plan based on that conversation. Her plan clearly demonstrated she had been able to truly pick up on who we are as gardeners as well as our likes and dislikes. Within a year, the space has started to look quite magical, to the point where one of my friends, an artist, has commented on the beautiful combination of colors and textures. Because of that experience, there was no doubt in our mind Lynn was the one we wanted when it became time to create a beautiful waterwise front yard. I'm looking forward to watching the magic unfold. Lynn has a wealth of knowledge about plants and has very strong opnions about anything related to them. She is very well connected to contractors, which was a tremendous help when it came to installation, and sets high expectations for the quality of their work as well. She was able to honor our budget and meet all deadlines. In addition to her knowledge, Lynn has a wry sense of humor that weeded out any anxiety and made the process a lot of fun.

We entrusted our entire garden to Green Patio Landscape Design. The owner, Lynn, brought great creativity and superb attention to detail to our project. She transformed our outdoor areas into gorgeous, usable living spaces, loaded with texture, variety and color all year. With logical seating areas, a beautiful outdoor kitchen with BBQ, a fire pit, a private oasis for our hot tub, and a dining area we can use most of the year now that we have a magnificent trellis woven with wisteria to shade from the sun and heaters for chilly evenings, Lynn far surpassed our hopes for the space. Lynn interviewed us extensively to ascertain our goals after which she provided us with a well conceived proposal, excellent sub contractors, and a realistic budget which she assiduously worked to maintain. She handpicked all of the specimens in our garden and created what is simply one of the most stunning gardens we have ever seen. After years of hiring contractor after contractor, with such disappointing results, we are thrilled to have hired someone who took the time to get degree in this field and is passionate about the work she does.

Lynn Saunders is an extremely talented and highly ethical landscape designer. She did an excellent job of redesigning my backyard. The scope of the project included hardscape, softscape and construction of arbors and pergolas. Lynn's esthetics are impeccable. She is very thoughtful in her selection and placement of plants so that they thrive. She turned shaded area of my garden (that was always a challenge) into a beautiful many layered palette. She created lovely vignettes (decomposed grants paths, bird bath, rockery, pottery) in the working area of my garden that used to be just functional raised beds. She removed trees which were not pruned correctly and an eyesore and replaced them with a beautiful, fast-growing variety to shade our courtyard within a relatively short time. She selected the right grape vine to grow on our patio arbor which not only provides shade in summer (and beautiful bunches of grapes hanging through), but beautiful red leaf colors in the fall. She considers all aspects of design, including irrigation, water conservation and lighting. She looks out for her clients and trains her crew well. She is a respectful employer and contractors respect her opinions. I would recommend Lynn to my friends, or anyone who appreciates and respects good design.

Lynn designed and completed a full landscaping project at our 1/2 acre residence in Los Altos. It included all phases from concept, design, and implementation. The project valued at $150k+ and included - a full pergola connected to the house - extensive brick and stone patio work - fully updated infrastructure irrigation, lighting, drainage - a relayout of backyard with lawn, berms, paths, planter boxes - all plant selections creating a water efficient, park-like setting surrounded by oaks trees - many native plants to accommodate our theme It was very collaborative. I tend to be hands-on and "very" opinionated and stubborn at times and with Lynn's guidance and expertise we always arrived with the best decisions and outcome. I was particularly impressed with Lynn's knowledge and selection of plants and trees, creation of unique spaces and full understanding of shade and sun through the year to make good plant choices. I'd make a special point in that the introductions and recommendations of Lynn's network of subcontractors was very valuable and a very positive experience. It led to a well-coordinated and compatible working team.

Lynn was creative, patient, knowledgeable and really helped us achieve our vision of an enjoyable back yard with focus on the pool and a beautiful eating area like we were in Tuscany! Green Patio became the toast of my neighborhood after Lynn completed our garden renovation. I loved what Lynn did and so did everyone who saw our place. Our backyard abutted a hotel parking lot, but by the time our project was done, we had a lovely oasis that was quiet, serene and enjoyable. She is very knowledgeable about the indigenous flora and ensured that the plants we selected would be happy and healthy for years to come. Her design sense is excellent, using pattern, color and texture that is attractive and fun, without overpowering a small space. She also designed a very practical garden, using drip irrigation throughout which is critical in our water-challenged area. She specified the highest quality products which I am now grateful for, given the number of foraging squirrels we have in the area that can chew up lesser quality products. I was very happy with the results of the project and Lynn made the whole process a delight.

It was great to work with Lynn Saunders on a complete re-do of our landscaping. Lynn worked with us throughout the months-long project from generating initial design concepts, to finding and managing multiple service providers, ordering plants and trees and carefully overseeing every aspect of the installation. Lynn has so many wonderful qualities that make her a pleasure to work with. Not only does she contribute excellent ideas but she also really cares about the quality of work -- everything from how the plans translate to reality (and adjustments that must be made in the field), to the health of the plants and trees when they are delivered to the site, to the reliability and design of the irrigation systems. Since we live in an area with persistent water shortages and drought, I particularly appreciated Lynn's attention to our desire to have both a beautiful and climate-appropriate landscape. Lynn was also very attentive to our budget and I felt she treated the expenditures as though they were coming from her own pocketbook. I would recommend Lynn without reservation.
