This project was completed a long time ago, and the Sep 2017 date is the date of the last correspondence from S+H.
S+H built an addition to my home, but they were grossly negligent with the roof construction. They bought and installed plywood sheathing on the roof, and the plywood had a large hole. This sheathing was near the edge of the roof. This put shingles on top of the plywood and its hole, but did not use any industry standard protection. No ice and water shield. No tar paper. No roofing felt. Nothing. They left the hole unprotected from the elements, except for the roof shingles.
After several years of water entering the addition structure, a spot finally appeared on the ceiling. A roofer inspected and found the roof hole above that area of the ceiling, and repaired the roof. A year or so later, another issue arose - a bird pecked a hole in the exterior siding near that area of the roof. A contractor came over to repair the hole, but discovered that water had caused extensive rot to the addition structure. We were greatly surprised, since there had been no visible evidence of there being such a significant problem. All of the rot was now completely dry, because the roof repair stopped further water from entering. But the many years of allowing water to enter had already done its damage.
I had many email contacts with S+H. They never denied responsibility. They just adamantly refused to do anything about it. Their version of being helpful was to give us the contact information of their lawyer, in case I wanted to pursue them legally. I spent $70,000 to do the repairs needed because of the S+H gross negligence. Either they used non-professionals to do my roof, or they hired professionals who deliberately took shortcuts that were sure to cause grave damage to my house. S+H provided no justification for their response, except to write that they had a one-year warranty. That was a falsehood. I sent them a copy of their contract, which did not have a one-year warranty.
There were other problems with S+H, but I don't want to include them since that would distract from the major issue that I described above.

I don't even know where to begin the review - they made my remodel (complete gutting job of 1865 house) a fun and memorable experience! The end product is my dream home, and they stayed in budget and completed on time. Minimal headache, thanks to my fantastic project manager John, who guided me through the process and provided valuable expertise and suggestions along the way. The only regret I have is that I cannot start all-over again - who can say this about their home remodel??

S&H replaced and restored all the doors and some woodwork in a custom mid century modern house. The work was beautifully done. The carpenters and painters couldn't have been more capable or nicer to work with. A wonderful experience.

Over the past 15 years, we have used every bit of S+H's knowledge, expertise and extraordinary worker pool in projects that range from installing an elevator and ramp (that made our 1912 Arts and Crafts house accessible AND beautiful!) to an outdoor water feature that has the neighbors stopping and meditating on the sound of the falling water. We lived in the house during a two year renovation that had two phases--redo the 3rd fl space, roof and enlarge dormers, following up with a foundation and utilities renovation. In truth, I miss the artisans not coming to our house and helping us create our new and very much loved living space.
As with any old house, you never know what you are going to find, but S+H could always deal with the problem. But there was no way to stay on budget either!

I can't speak highly enough about our interactions with Doug Hanna, co-owner of S & H and Mike Segal, General Contractor. We hired them to solve our very complicated basement water infiltration problems. This was after we did a renovation with another company where we had previously paid to have these issues addressed. It turned out that our previous contractor had set up a system that created the perfect storm for water infiltration in several areas of the basement which led to black mold and a complete demolition of a beautifully finished basement with hardwood floors, drywall and custom furniture and lighting. Our yard also had to be completely dug up as a result of the previous contractors errors.
Working on a day to day basis with Mike Segal as our General Contractor has been a rewarding and fun process. Mike has great relationships with other professionals in the industry, he is always available by phone or email and he really listens to our concerns and suggestions.
In 2006 when we began or project we did not hire S & H because we heard that they were top quality but also very expensive. We made a huge and costly mistake. We have not found their prices to be hirer than our previous contractor and we know that they work that has been done will last forever. We have left our basement unfinished as a test for water infiltration and we have had no problems.
During the process of waterproofing the basement, we had the good fortune of getting to know the Green Team division. The staff led by Jack Shea and Ed Sullivan along with Moose and others were very hard working and very professional. Similarly, I have found the subcontractors that S & H uses to be much for competent and friendly than most of the previous subs that we used. I enjoy having the staff around they are respectful, helpful and trustworthy. These are not people who are hired randomly rather they have made a career at S&H. They did both interior and exterior work, really the heavy lifting with heavy machines. They parged our walls with a special waterproofing material and took out the old concrete, place crushed stones and proper internal drainage along with a new concrete floor. The system tied into an extensive our door drainage system and took our water away from the house into a holding tank.

S+H did a full gut renovation and addition on our 1930s colonial. From the initial planning through to the end details they were thoughtful, thorough, and overall impeccable. Their highly skilled team handled every detail with careful consideration. I highly recommend S+H.

S+H did an excellent job on the significant renovation of a home we recently bought, and we recommend them highly. This project included relocating and rebuilding the main stairway, structural work, new kitchen, and family room updates. They connected us with the right architect for our needs, guided us through decisions at critical points in the process, and ensured that our job proceeded along amazingly quickly and efficiently. All of the team members and sub-contractors we worked with brought strong expertise and were extremely responsive and hard-working. We were particularly pleased that S+H was sensitive to our budget throughout the process and offered good advice on how to allocate our resources for the best result. We now love our new house!

The S & H Construction team did a masterful job on the construction in our Brookline condo. Their task was to create a wheelchair accessible space. They replaced our kitchen and two bathrooms. They were creative, paid excellent attention to detail, met the deadlines in a timely manner, were extremely knowledgeable, as well as being consistently responsive to our additional requests.
Since wheelchair access was a major issue for us, it was wonderful to have a contractor that I could trust to implement solutions to difficult accessibility challenges.

For some 30 years, S+H has undertaken many renovation/ improvements in our house and has provided invaluable service in assessing and anticipating potential problems. Whether upgrading a bathroom, installing a roof deck, retro-fitting a 1970's kitchen with a granite counter-top or managing the installation of a new heating system, the results have been outstanding and the process has been seamless and transparent. The value gained was commensurate with cost and ultimate peace of mind. S+H is not just a business entity, It is a collection of highly skilled, professionals who can be trusted to find creative solutions to real problems. S+H has consistently relied on sub-contractors from various realms of the building trade who reflect the high standards that I have come to expect from tasks delegated to S+H as the general contractor. All have been responsible, trustworthy and personable. I would trust my house to S+H for any project and I do.

Doug Hanna and his team did a phenomenal job renovating our home, which dates back to 1860. S+H completely gutted and rebuilt all of our bathrooms which are now luxurious yet appropriate for a historic Victorian in Belmont, MA. First, Doug was able to recommend a phenomenal architect for the design of our projects, from the idea to turn a dark and scary hallway closet into a bright and beautiful laundry room to adding high velocity heat using small ducts. They also completely gutted and waterproofed what was a mildewed and musty basement - they even added radiant heat to the basement floors (warm on bare feet!), which is now one of our favorite parts of the house. They did such incredible work and have really helped bring our old house to life. We couldn't be happier with their masterful craftsmanship (the woodwork is breathtaking), their respect for the details and for taking such great care of our house in the process. Doug, John, Sarah and the rest of the S+H team were great to work with - always friendly, positive and helpful. They made it easy and finished on time. The quality of their work is impeccable - these guys are the best of the best. We are beyond thrilled!

The basement of my house, which I had just purchased, turned out to be a water-logged nightmare after the horrendous spring floods of 2010. S+H came in quickly after I called. Even before they gave me an estimate, they offered help with pumps and sand bags. After the estimate, and discussions about the problems, which were many, I hired S+H. Everyone associated with the company was expert, very professional, extremely helpful, and respectful of my home and family.
As someone who deals with contractors and trades people regularly, I was impressed with the way S+H performed the work, which included demolishing the basement, installing an interior perimeter drain and sump pump, fortifying and water-proofing walls. The did what the said they would do in a timely fashion and within budget.
Simply put, great guys doing great work.

Work done: Renovation of single family house including new kitchen, 2 new bathrooms, window replacement, updated electrical and plumbing, new deck, new stairwell, 3rd floor entire renovation, brick driveway, repairing foundation.
Time and Budget: We had a GMP contract, and while they did go over budget, they honored our contract and we were not financially responsible for that. There were some unforeseen expenses that were beyond the original scope of the project which we of course were responsible for. When these problems arose, they offered us several options at different levels of cost and time involvement to allow us to make those decisions which we really appreciated. The project was slightly longer than originally anticipated, although that was due to some unforseen circumstances mentioned above. Overall they were realistic in their time schedule.
Experience: We had an overall excellent experience working with S&H, and have since re-hired them to do a couple other smaller projects at our home and at our office. Our experience in particular with Dan McLaughlin as the construction manager was outstanding - he is an incredibly talented man, knowledgeable, flexible, smart, great at problem solving, responsive to our needs or concerns, excellent communicator - we could not say more positive things about him. Likewise, many of the other S&H personnel as well as their subs were superb.

We would hire them again, and have - and would recommend them without reservation.
