John Linam Jr, Architect, PLLC

John is a wonderful architect. I hired him for a home renovation project in 2015, and then because I was so pleased with how the project turned out, I hired him again in 2017 for a home addition. John is everything one wants in an architect - professional, creative, easy to contact, sensitive to one's style and preferences, and works well with other professionals. I had very good experiences working with him, and I wouldn't change a thing about either project.

My wife and I were faced with a Pre-War Co-Op in Manhattan that was riddled historic structural challenges, electrical and plumbing that was no longer to code, asbestos abatement issues, etc. (not to mention the challenge of navigating through Co-Op board design approval, as well as building engineering and architectural approval). Administratively, John's value was only outmatched by his design competency in working with a complicated and extremely constrained space and his ability to effectively manage a diverse set of personalities within our GC and subs. I have been building single family homes for over 30 years in the Washington DC Metropolitan area and have worked with many of the area's top Architects. I've enjoyed working with John on multiple projects in Chevy Chase, Bethesda, and DC. I have found John's construction drawings consistently provide accurate and comprehensive details that are vital for the bidding and construction process. As a client, I really cannot say enough good things about John Linam. John has a good eye, cares strongly about maintaining the charm of existing older spaces, and really listens to what it is you're looking for in your space. But really, I think it is his calm demeanour that helps me tremendously. It's a stressful process, and I ALWAYS (truly, without fail!) came away feeling better after talking with John. The amount of detail that goes into his construction drawings is more than enough for any contractor to build from; there are no design or structural choices left up to the contractor for interpretation. I originally hired John to assist with the completion of my primary residence. He had a tough assignment joining the team midway through construction, but he was able to hit the ground running and his contributions were key to the success of the project. Based on that experience I recently hired John again to be the architect for a multiple office building renovation project. Again, John was professional, easy to work with, and critial to the project's success. I would strongly recommend him or any residential or commercial project.

John has designed and led us through two house projects. The first time we renovated our home ($530,000 construction costs) and second time we built a new house ($590,000 construction costs) as an investment. John always actively listened to us and designed in a way that each room by itself turned into a great product considering its location within the house and the property. He has great abilities getting the most out small spaces. Usage, furnishing, light, feel and flexibility are among many things John considers when he designs. John loves different architectural styles and has a passion for clean lines but also produces great traditional designs. In addition to his design we and our contractors really appreciated his strong understanding of construction and permits. He and his structural engineer work out details contractors can work from without any confusion. His communication skills with all parties involved in construction from government agencies to contractors, subcontractors and neighbors expedite the process and bring an atmosphere of cordial professionalism and a view toward solutions to a project. Last but not least his responsiveness and very detailed documentation have made our lives very easy.

John designed a family room addition and basement remodel which included creating a full bath out of a half-bath, and a laundry room/guest room out of an out-dated rec room. He also guided us through an update of our windows, roof, and siding. The work was completed September 2008. His attention to detail and creative solutions made the design process fun, and then he was able to identify the best contractor for us to use. He was mindful of our budget constraints, and incorporated the style of our house in the addition design. We definitely would use him for another project.

John is wonderful to work with! We did a large renovation, basically taking the house down to the foundation and bumping out the back. He talked with us about what characteristics we wanted in our house and then came up with three different plan options that met our needs. John helped us refine the design to fit our family's lifestyle; he was always open to our thoughts and gave us honest answers and viable choices. Throughout the process, John was very good about helping us watch our budget while fulfilling our design needs.

John Linam is a superb architect. Following my initial meeting with him, John returned with a drawing of a plan for our home. That plan reflected our first conversation and my hopes for the renovation beautifully. He had listened well. Throughout the work on the house, John worked congenially and thoughtfully with the contractor in overseeing the renovation work. He assisted me on a weekly basis and sometime more often on selections for cabinets, drawers, knobs, windows, doors, countertops, floors, heating and AC systems and lighting. He also advised me on the budget/expenses as submitted and expended by the contractor. We were thrilled with the results.

John Linam transformed our house from a cold, out of date, lifeless shell to a warm, elegant, tranquil, modern, and welcoming home. He worked with our ideas and parameters and delivered results beyond our imagination and expectations. Countless people have marveled at and complimented the work John did in our home.
