I had the privilege of working with Ellen Walker on the Edmonton Mennonite Guest Home. It truly was a privilege! Ellen is an extraordinary designer! What amazed me was her knowledge of different materials including wood, flooring, upholstery, blinds glass, door hardware, paint, tile, and cabinets etc. We were wanting a guest home that felt like a home but had the durability of a commercial building. She was able to suggest products that had longevity, felt like home, and worked within our budget. All the items Ellen chose were backed with solid reasons. Ellen put her whole heart into our project, was very approachable, and responded quickly to any questions or concerns we had! I fully recommend Ellen for any project you may have and I would love to work with her again as the opportunity arises.

I had the pleasure of working with Ellen Walker at a recent hospitality project where design and its implications on guests mattered. Fostering and developing ideas from Historic footnotes of the Alberta Mennonite Community was a paramount concern. Integrating these important aspects within a modern-day project was certainly achieved; with seamless contemporary styling, unbuffered warmth with rooms that were beautifully inviting without triteness or obligation to souvenir-hunt by contributing thematic bobbles to satisfy a client.
Ellen's work is layered with commitment and graceful fluidity with a resolve to have spaces carefully composed with consideration, craftsmanship and easefulness; all welcoming and enveloping as your favourite armchair on a Friday night.
Always professional, inclusive, hardworking, 'all-in' with a keen eye.
I loved working with her; a great sport and connection.

Thank you so much for this lovely review. You were an absolute delight to work with and were a big part of pulling this project all together in the end! It was so wonderful to be able to leave it to you, and know that it all would be installed accurately, correctly and with a keen eye and suggestions.

We had an opportunity to see Ellens great work on a house that we had custom built. The homeowner had hired her to do all of the Interior Decorating and she did not disappoint, she did an amazing job!

Thank you very much for the lovely complement. It was a pleasure working with you on this clien't home!
After deciding that we did not want to build at this time we knew that we wanted to keep our home looking current and that it needed a refresh (we have been in our home for 10 years). Ellen did an amazing job of both. She chose some new paint colors and tiles which just changed the looks of rooms. Where her service was really outstanding for us was on "styling" our home; by moving and rearranging items which we wanted to keep and then purchasing items which totally fit our life style we feel like we have moved into a new home!!!!

Average rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Sublime Design Studio Inc. has had the pleasure of working with Ellen Walker Design Group on a few projects now, initially a commercial restaurant renovation and more recently several residential renovations.
Ellen consistently brings great ideas to the table, whether it is a small room in someone’s house or a large commercial design. Ellen has a strong attention to detail, she will provide sketches or verbal ideas and we will transform them into construction drawings. She designed a great wine display for the restaurant we worked on. Taking that piece of millwork from her ideas & sketches, into construction drawings, to then seeing the final built result was exceptional. Ellen communicates her ideas well and makes her requirements clear up front, making our projects run smoothly and our work enjoyable.
My favorite thing about Ellen is how personally she takes her projects. I can tell that she takes pride and care in her work, and genuinely wants to provide the best possible service to her clients.

Comment from Ellen Walker Design Group:
Thank you Elaine for your lovely commnents. Its always a pleasure working with you and having you as a team member on our projects. Your quick turnaround time, attention to detail and interpretation of my concepts into construction drawings is exemplary! I really enjoy working with you and hope we have many more projects together in the future.
Ellen is a skilled and experienced designer, however, she lacks skill in clear communication around her billing practices. We hired Ellen to help us with a renovation. We bought a 12 year old house and wanted to update the kitchen by replacing a built in desk with a pantry, change one cupboard, add quartz countertops and a new backsplash. We also wanted to put shelving in the office, paint the entire interior, update an entertainment wall downstairs and improve a storage room. Also some aesthetic ideas around light fixtures, new living room furniture and existing furniture placement.
Ellen was vague with exactly how much her services would cost and was unable to give us a ballpark figure, saying it depended.
Our first month bill was $9417.19. Ellen assured us the first month is always the most expensive. The second month bill was $13,827.19. This billing reflects “planning” only; nothing was bought, no work was done and no one else was paid.
At that point we felt that $23,244.38 was an astronomical amount to plan a renovation and feared what the coming months might bring. We ended our relationship with Ellen Walker Design after two months as it was evident our budget was not a concern to Ellen. We did ask for the work that reflected her planning but was told by Ellen that it would be “Greek” to us. She did provide us with a few quotes and some pictures of furniture.
We took responsibility for not insisting on specifics around her billing practices and we paid Ellen in full. We also let Ellen know we felt her billing practices were unreasonable but she responded saying that is what it costs.
We understand many people are prepared to pay such design planning bills for “white glove turn key service”. We feel foolish and hope to save someone else the same experience.
Part of Ellen’s process was to have us go through the Houzz site to give her ideas about our preferences (billed at $393.75 for her time to review). I was previously unaware of this site and am most grateful as it is a fantastic resource and a wonderful place to not only get ideas but also read local reviews.
I would not recommend Ellen Walker Design based on her billing practices and vague communication style.

Comment from Ellen Walker Design Group:
We at Ellen Walker Design Group are saddened by this review. Over the last 20 years we’ve always endeavored to give the highest quality finished product and customer experience possible.
Despite our endeavour to fully explain the workflow and payment outlined in our detailed contract, our 15 Step Project Management System and its benefits, were clearly not understood by this client. Every effort was made to fairly address her concerns.
The purpose of doing all the planning work upfront along with payment of design fees, is to have the full project planned and quoted (this is the final cost barring unforeseen obstructions, hidden elements, or decay regarding the premises) in detail before any of the work begins.
At this stage (the presentation stage) the client then has a choice:
1. Complete the full project as planned,
2. To reduce the scope of the original plan (ie. complete work in phases),
3. Take the detailed drawings (plans), 2-D elevations, fabric samples, wallcovering samples, paint colour samples, floor samples, millwork samples, hardware samples, images of furnishings, plumbing and lighting fixtures, and window treatments, quotes from trades, and suppliers to another designer or do the project themselves.
There is a large amount of time, focus and attention to detail invested in the project by our design team (included principal designer, intermediate designer and design assistant in this particular project) to get such a detailed end product. Our design fees reflect the cost of producing this.
Through the 50/50 sharing of trade discounts above 10%, our system is designed so that design fees the client has paid to the presentation stage are in many cases offset once the project is taken to completion (the bulk of design fees are paid up to the presentation stage, but savings are realized once the work stage is completed).
It is unfortunate that this client had a negative experience with our company, but we do endeavor to explain billing procedures and provide top of the line white-gloved, turn-key service and a positive user experience for everyone we do business with. This has enabled us to have a 99.9% client satisfaction rate over the 20 years our company has been in business.

Ellen did an excellent job of understanding our wishes and choosing furniture, colors, etc. to give our offices the "feel" we were looking for. We are pleased with our professional office and at the same time it is very comfortable. We have received many compliments regarding the blend of colors, etc.

Ellen was a fantastic help in the development and construction of my new home. She helped me review plans, redesign the layout of my basement, configure and design the built-in cabinets in my living room and reading room. She also added her opinion to the selection of paint colors and helped us custom design the trim and casing.
When the house was completed, she helped with the pre-turnover meeting and review. After I had moved in, Ellen helped me select and place furniture and other items throughout the house. One of my favorite items in the house, is three mirrors that are joined together like gears. As an engineer, this just seems so fitting for my new home.
My new home is so much more complete than it would have been without her help. Thanks Ellen - you made my new house feel like a home from my first night here.

Comment from Ellen Walker Design Group:
Thanks so much for your comments Jim. I truly loved working with you!
I hired Ellen Walker Design to provide window treatments for my new office. As a Psychologist that consults with a variety of individuals and companies, it is important to provide an environment that is comfortable, calm, friendly and professional. Ellen Walker looked after me personally. She was able to translate what I was looking for into the ideal blinds for my needs. She also gave me valuable feedback on other design elements in my space.
She was a pleasure to work with. I have dealt with other designers in the past and I would have to say that Ellen was the easiest and most friendly to work with. She even personally over-saw the installation (which was done on time and with no issues).
Consulting with Ellen is also a pleasure. Her interest and deep understanding of how design elements either support or diminish psychological and physical health (as well as productivity and performance at work) is inspiring. She is definitely at the forefront of this emerging area of design.
I would definitely recommend Ellen Walker Design and hire the company again for my future design needs.

"My experience with Ellen Walker Design Solutions has been extremely positive. I first met Ellen at my home for an interior design consult over 10 years ago. Since that time, Ellen has consulted and been instrumental in the interior and exterior design of our cabin in Sylvan Lake and our new shop in Clearview Industrial Park.
Ellen has helped me with paint colour, furniturelayout, furniture and drapery choices, lighting and plumbing fixtures, and even unpacked boxes with me when the delivery arrived. Ellen’s attention to detail, vast knowledge and resources, professional and friendly service has always made it a pleasure to work with her.
Throughout the numerous projects I have worked with Ellen, I have always been very pleased with the end result and I would highly recommend Ellen Walker Design Solutions!”

This is the second time I hired Ellen to help with my home. The first time was a main floor renovation and the second time was a new house. Ellen is outstanding and I would highly recommend her. Her best quality is that she takes the time to get to know you and helps design and decorate your home with you in mind. She totally captured what style we wanted in both the renovation and the new build. Some designers you can go into a home and recognize their work, because they put their own taste or spin on it, but not Ellen, she designs the home for you and only you. She will take you from start to finish and she takes great pride in her work and stands behind her products. I would totally recommend her to anyone.
