Comment from David Moulton AIA:
Thank you John! We really enjoy working with you. Not only are you wonderful to work with, you anticipate every aspect of the job, manage the job and crew very professionally, and your work is superb. We look forward to working with you in the future. Here is a picture of one of the bathrooms we remodeled with John Schmidt Construction.
David Moulton, architect, and Laura Moulton, designer, were referred by my contractor, Bob Buechner, who had previously worked with them. The project involved the complete gutting and renovation of three bathrooms. The bathrooms had not been remodeled since the house was originally built on the Sea Ranch in 1974. David was able to draft very detailed and creative plans, which was no easy task since all three spaces were somewhat oddly shaped, of limited space, and afforded an architectural challenge. Laura and I spent considerable time reviewing a multitude of design options in the outfitting of all three bathrooms.
David, Laura, and I worked together throughout all aspects of the project. Every last detail involved input from all three of us, and they respected and implemented any of my specific requests. During the course of construction, they made repeated trips to the sight to monitor progress, and make sure that everything was proceeding as planned. It should be mentioned that not only did David provide very detailed and thorough plans, but Laura also compiled an extremely detailed Product Specification book that included information regarding every aspect of the design from fixtures, manuals, wallpaper, tile variations, etc.. This book was an important reference source for the contractor and subcontractors, who constantly referred to it. Since each bathroom was of a different design, there were a myriad of design details that the book documented.
David and Laura were a pleasure to work with, were very supportive throughout the entire project. I would have no hesitation in using them again and I recommend them highly.

Comment from David Moulton AIA:
Thank you Mario! We had such fun working with you on this project and seeing the transformation of these bathrooms into fresh, new, inviting spaces. Throughout the process you brought your own joy and love of design which made for a rich and productive collaboration.
I’ve had the pleasure of knowing David Moulton for over nine years, six of which I spent working directly with him. He is a talented architect, excellent communicator, skillful collaborator, intelligent and fair-minded businessman, amazing leader, generous mentor, remarkable human being, and fun person to be around. He has a keen aesthetic eye and can handle large and small projects with extraordinary finesse. His partner Laura is equally lovely and incredibly talented in her own right. If you hire them, you will not only get a beautiful space but will enjoy the entire process!

Because of David’s brilliant talent, patience, and delightful and cheerful personality, we have an addition to our home that is everything we’d hoped and more.
I had appointments with three architects, David Moulton being the first. After talking with him and Laura, I knew they understood our vision. Our remodel was going to be complex and we didn’t make it any easier. Having given the remodel several years of thought, we gave David a long list of Do’s and Don’ts, Must Haves, Nice to Haves, Likes and Dislikes. The first and most important being that no trees and preferably no stumps were to be removed. We had two outbuildings about three feet apart, one a garage with an unusable loft above. Although the other was used infrequently as an office, we were constantly battling mold in both. Our hope was to join the two, add a full bath, and create a useable master and office. Also, we wanted to attach the buildings to the main house with a raised, covered bridge to allow easy access to the new rooms and ensure our pets could securely travel between the main house and addition. We also wanted to accommodate the wildlife that passes through our property.
To create our plan, David worked with structural engineers, soil engineers, the contractor, the septic consultant and other professionals. David’s initial draft was fabulous. He took it to the Sea Ranch Design Committee for comments regarding the concept as we knew the raised bridge was a bit out-of-the-box. In all, the plan was before the Committee three times. Although there were questions and concerns, David cheerfully explained the thinking behind the options chosen. He willingly and good-naturedly incorporated those suggestions which enhanced the plan. Many of those suggestions required additional review with the various other professionals.
Throughout the plan process, Laura was invaluable. After the plan was approved, she made the process of choosing the finishes painless and easy. She has very carefully taken our style into consideration with all her suggestions. She does all the research and sample gathering, which is quite the feat considering our somewhat isolated region. Her expertise with color and texture is creating warm and welcoming, cheerful rooms. They reflect us.
Working with David and Laura has been a joy. They are a superb team. Construction is almost at an end, just the finishes to complete. David has worked with the contractor throughout. From beginning to end it has been a wonderful and quite effortless experience for us. We’d do it again.

My husband and I were new to the area and needed assistance with both a kitchen and bathroom remodel. We didn't know where to begin but after several conversations with Dave and Laura, we knew we were on the right track. They assisted with everything from architectural design, product acquisition, contractors, and more. They always had thoughtful personalised suggestions and were available for questions throughout and after the project. We love our new kitchen and master bath!! We would (and are planning to) use them again!

I worked with David Moulton on a large multi-use project in San Francisco when he was with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. He listened to our input, took the time to understand our objectives, presented creative solutions and, once the design direction was set, expertly guided us through the public approval process and construction. The result is a landmark building. David's creative ability, attention to detail and exquisite taste are equally apparent in his current residential projects, including his own home. The North Coast is lucky to have David and his wife Laura as resources for design and construction.

David Moulton AIA (David) was hired to design a major renovation of a house located in The Sea Ranch (TSR) in northern CA. An initial draft design of a proposed renovation of the entire house, with estimated budgets for each phase/component, was developed. I then selected which parts of the total renovation I could afford at that time. The "draft total redesign" plan will enable future renovation work in other parts of the house to blend well with the work just completed. David and his partner Laura were very helpful in helping me set my priorities. Detailed design drawings for the project were then completed and submitted to TSR Assoc. for review, negotiation (at which David excelled), and approval. The major components were: a new kitchen, new hard wood floors throughout, conversion of a former covered entrance into an internal closet, upgrade of a small bathroom, addition of a wood burning stove, hot tub, and solving the problem of very heavy/dark ceiling beams. David and Laura were very helpful in presenting options for counter tops, cabinets, fixtures, flooring, doors, etc., and then helping me analyze then select the features I wanted. Special features include a redwood slab desk in a work nook, a Sea Ranch barn door style feature to cover two closets in a "too busy" entry way, conversion of a tiny/drab bathroom into what one might find in a high end yacht. Laura, who gives cooking demonstrations, was especially helpful in selecting kitchen features such as sizes of cabinets/drawers, deciding what utensils should be stored where, gas vs electric stove, etc. Major window designs/replacements greatly lightened the house and improved ocean and forest views. Many alterations/adjustments in the design were made as construction progressed, and David worked very smoothly with the builder (who greatly respected David's design). David inspected construction progress probably every other day through much of the project (months),, and discussed proposed alterations as the builder came up with them. Black mold contamination behind some walls was discovered which resulted in extra design work for new drywall, studs, and outside siding. Two stairways were too narrow and had uneven steps requiring very clever design work to correct. David provided all the necessary documentation that TSR Assoc needed for final project approval. Both David and Laura were very pleasant to work with, and were very efficient and creative.
Below, the term "project cost" is assumed to refer to design only.

My wife and I are in the process of hiring David to remodel an office area.
I have known David for over 3 years, after representing he and his wife in the purchase of their Sea Ranch home. I have seen first hand how creative and talented he is, after watching the complete transformation of his own home. David works well with a variety of trades people and his years of experience give him the ability to resolve challenges, in a diplomatic manner.
I would highly recommend him for any size project.
