Catterall Franklin Architects

Catterall Franklin is a new generation of architectural consultancy, which places collaboration and exchange at the heart of the practice’s ethos and outlook. We work throughout the UK with experience across domestic, private and public sectors. Catterall Franklin provides full architectural services from the first sketches, through planning, building regulations, contractor selection and construction to completed project handover. We work closely with clients, to produce a successful outcome that responds to their requirements and intentions, rather than to a specific architectural style. Alex Catterall founded Red Works Studio in 2014, prior to forming Catterall Franklin. He has worked in a variety of different sectors both at home in the UK and in France, Norway and Vietnam. Having worked for John Pawson, Grimshaw, Thomas Heatherwick and De Matos Ryan, he is specifically interested in designing private houses, places to eat, drink and recreational spaces. Alex is particularly fond of working with existing buildings. He enjoys the play between the soulful character of the existing alongside the complimentary introduction of the modern. Alex was educated at Central St.Martins, the Architectural Association and Cambridge University, where he qualified as an architect in 2009. Alex Franklin has previously held senior positions at several AJ100 architectural practices. He was a founder of Loop Architecture in 2006 after winning ‘Europan 8’ UK for 150 exemplar homes in Oldham, prior to forming Catterall Franklin. Alex has award-winning architectural experience across various sectors including commercial, residential, mixed-use, the arts, historic buildings and master planning. Alex was educated at the University of Edinburgh and at the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL, where he qualified as an architect in 2003. He lived for many years prior to this, in the United States, Austria, and in Norway. Alex has taught Architecture for three years between 2001-2004 at the University of Sheffield’s Diploma School within the School of Architecture, and has been a critic at UCL at Degree, Diploma and Masters levels.
