Like many California ranch homes built in the 1950s, this original master bathroom was not really a "master bath." My clients, who only three years ago purchased the home from the family of the original owner, were saddled with a small, dysfunctional space. Chief among the dysfunctions: a vanity only 30" high, and an inconveniently placed window that forced the too-low vanity mirror to reflect only the waist and partial torso--not the face--of anyone standing in front of it. They wanted not only a more spacious bathroom but a bedroom as well, so we worked in tandem with an architect and contractor to come up with a fantastic new space: a true Master Suite. In order to refine a design concept for the soon-to-be larger space, and thereby narrow down material choices, my clients and I had a brainstorming session: we spoke of an elegant Old World/ European bedroom and bathroom, a luxurious bath that would reference a Roman spa, and finally the idea of a Hammam was brought into the mix. We blended these ideas together in oil-rubbed bronze fixtures, and a tiny tile mosaic in beautiful Bursa Beige marble from Turkey and white Thassos marble from Greece. The new generously sized bathroom boasts a jetted soaking tub, a very large walk-in shower, a double-sided fireplace (facing the tub on the bath side), and a luxurious 8' long vanity with double sinks and a storage tower. The vanity wall is covered with a mosaic vine pattern in a beautiful Bursa Beige marble from Turkey and white Thassos marble from Greece,. The custom Larson Juhl framed mirrors are flanked by gorgeous hand-wrought scones from Hubbardton Forge which echo the vine and leaf pattern in the mosaic. And the vanity itself features an LED strip in the toe-kick which allows one to see in the middle of the night without having to turn on a shockingly bright overhead fixture. At the other end of the master bath, a luxurious jetted tub nestles by a fireplace in the bay window area. Views of my clients' garden can be seen while soaking in bubbles. The over-sized walk-in shower features a paneled wainscoting effect which I designed in Crema Marfil marble. The vine mosaic continues in the shower, topped by green onyx squares. A rainshower head and a hand-held spray on a bar provides showering options. The shower floor slopes gently in one direction toward a hidden linear drain; this allows the floor to be read as a continuation of the main space, without being interrupted by a center drain. The priority of this complete bathroom remodel was to add features that allowed the client to age in place in their home in Santa Cruz County. We replaced the tub and shower with a level entry shower in the same footprint. The new designer grab bars act as towel bars while also allowing the homeowner to hold on to something sturdy while entering and exiting the shower. We also added a raised toilet seat that makes it easy to stand up after using the toilet.

In this Gainesville guest bath design, Shiloh Select Poplar Seagull finish cabinetry enhances the natural tones of the wood. The combination of natural wood with Richelieu brushed nickel hardware, a white countertop and sink with a Delta two-handled faucet creates a bright, welcoming space for this hall bathroom. The vanity area is finished off with a Glasscrafters mirrored medicine cabinet and Kichler wall sconces. A half wall separates the vanity from a Toto Drake II toilet, which sits next to the combination bathtub/shower. The Kohler Archer tub, faucet, and showerheads enhance the style of this space along with Dal Rittenhouse white subway tile with a mosaic tile border. The shower also includes corner shelves and grab bars.

Nancy Knickerbocker of Reico Kitchen and Bath in Southern Pines, NC collaborated with Tod Reid to design a transitional styled inspired a primary and guest bathroom featuring Masterpiece and Ultracraft cabinetry. For the primary bathroom, the vanity cabinets are Masterpiece in the Martel door style in Maple with a Shortbread finish, complimented by Silestone Calacatta Gold countertops. A linen cabinet in Ultracraft in the Avon door style with a Moon Bay finish completes the design. The primary bathroom also includes a Tile Inc. Glacier Wave Gloss shower wall tile and Bakersfield Pumice bath and shower floor tile. The guest bathroom vanity cabinets are Masterpiece in the Ganon door style with a Dove White finish complemented with Silestone Miami White countertops. The design also includes Watercolors O'Keefe shower wall tile, Canvas White Subway wall end tile and Bakersfield Pumice bath and shower floor tile. Both bathrooms feature Kohler plumbing fixtures and accessories. "I enjoyed working with these clients. They had clear goals for their projects, and I believe we achieved them! In the primary bath, we enlarged the shower by removing a garden tub. Opting for large glass panels highlights the wave tile and creates an open feel. We also replaced the water closet door with a knee wall for privacy and replaced the linen closet with colorful cabinetry, making the space more functional. The tall cabinet on the left now includes two laundry hampers, and the black hardware ties everything together nicely," said Nancy. "The guest bathroom, located just off the main living area, sees frequent use. We replaced the existing tub/shower combination with a shower only. The watercolor tiles on the back wall steal the show whenever the door is open, adding a beautiful focal point to the space." Photo courtesy of ShowSpaces Photography.
