Destination Living
The brief for this project was for the house to be at one with its surroundings.
Integrating harmoniously into its coastal setting a focus for the house was to open it up to allow the light and sea breeze to breathe through the building. The first floor seems almost to levitate above the landscape by minimising the visual bulk of the ground floor through the use of cantilevers and extensive glazing. The contemporary lines and low lying form echo the rolling country in which it resides.

This home is located on a cul-de-sac of a quiet development adjacent to a local metropark. The living areas are generally shaded and oriented to the south with views of a wooded wetland.
Wood ceilings and stone flooring define and unify two primary axes through the structure; the main hall, terminating at each end with views into the woods, dividing the plan longitudinally. This axis also includes the dining room and foyer and serves as a gallery for the Owner’s contemporary art collection. A transverse axis begins with a low concrete wall at the entrance and foyer, which draws one through the living room, and out to the more private rear deck and terraces.
The design provides comfortable living spaces for a family of four, and satisfies all of the programmatic requirements of the client, including livability, ability to entertain, and space for growing children.

Located on an established corner in the neighbourhood of Killarney in Calgary, AB, this new single-family custom home was designed to make a lasting impression.
With a striking rectangular design and plenty of modern clean lines, this home is full of character. Materials include smooth stucco, horizontal siding, brick, metal panelling and cedar accents – and of course, the large glass windows that are a hallmark of modern architecture.
The expansive windows wrap around the corners to let the light pour into the interior from multiple sides. Rather than incorporating the garage front and center like many contemporary homes, the home has a simple walkway to its stylish asymmetrical front entrance (the garage is located to the side of the home).

Fir trees from the island were milled nearby and used to clad both structures. The exterior siding is a reverse board and batten system with varied vertical board widths; a nod to traditional siding methods while giving the cabins a clean modern look. The dark stain chosen for the exterior allows for some of the natural red hues of the fir to come through while also allowing the structures to recede into the trees and shadows.
