Despite popular belief, true modern homes do not follow popular trends. In fact, the modern style that we know today is from a 20th century design movement which focusses on structural simplicity, order and functionality.

Modern spaces incorporate neutral colours, basic natural materials and clean architectural lines, with an emphasis on strong lines, a lack of ornamentation and minimal texture; it uses straightforward furniture and dramatic modern art to complement the stark architecture. Lighting is also a key structural element that accentuates planes and highlights focal points.

Modern design is often a love-it or hate-it style — many appreciate its minimalist, uncluttered feel, while others miss the warmth and variety found in other styles. Modern design is often confused with contemporary design, which is constantly changing and evolving with the times and trends.
