This beach-town home with attic features a rear paver patio with rear porch that spans the width of the home. Multiple types of light white exterior siding were used. The porch has access to the backyard with steps down the middle. Easy access to the inside was designed with 3 sets of french doors. The rear porch feels very beachy and casual with its gray floors, white trim, white privacy curtains, black curtain rods, light wood ceiling, simple wicker chairs around a long table, multiple seating areas, and contrasting black light fixtures & fans. The simple grass landscaping softens the edge of the porch. The porch can be used rain or shine to comfortably seat friends & family, while the rear paver patio can be used to enjoy some rays - that is when it is not a cloud day like today.

This home for a family of four in Houston Heights nods to the neighborhood’s historic bungalows with oversized 'clapboard' siding and a gable roof form with a distinctly modern reinterpretation. Two mature live oak trees at the front of the site provide a shaded canopy upon entry. The volume of the building tapers slightly from the peak at the center of the site to the primary bedroom at the front of the home where a large window at the foot of the bed frames a view of the tree canopy. Spaces are carved away from the overall volume in order to bring outdoor space into the interior of the home. In addition to the porches at the front and back of the house that are typical to most homes, each bedroom also opens to a generous private patio recessed within the building’s volume. An interior atrium brings vegetation and natural light into the kitchen and dining spaces while a deep canopy provides shade to a broad opening just outside the living room. At the peak of the gabled roof, a skylight brings daylight into a lofted reading space. The family’s penchant for puzzles inspired the details within the home. Throughout the house, irregularly shaped millwork door panels overlap with adjacent cabinet boxes to create interlocking planes. Staggered gaps in cabinet doors and drawers serve as handles, creating playful patterns. In the Puzzle Room, a custom designed table allows for puzzles in progress to be stored internally until homework is completed.

This project for a builder husband and interior-designer wife involved adding onto and restoring the luster of a c. 1883 Carpenter Gothic cottage in Barrington that they had occupied for years while raising their two sons. They were ready to ditch their small tacked-on kitchen that was mostly isolated from the rest of the house, views/daylight, as well as the yard, and replace it with something more generous, brighter, and more open that would improve flow inside and out. They were also eager for a better mudroom, new first-floor 3/4 bath, new basement stair, and a new second-floor master suite above. The design challenge was to conceive of an addition and renovations that would be in balanced conversation with the original house without dwarfing or competing with it. The new cross-gable addition echoes the original house form, at a somewhat smaller scale and with a simplified more contemporary exterior treatment that is sympathetic to the old house but clearly differentiated from it. Renovations included the removal of replacement vinyl windows by others and the installation of new Pella black clad windows in the original house, a new dormer in one of the son’s bedrooms, and in the addition. At the first-floor interior intersection between the existing house and the addition, two new large openings enhance flow and access to daylight/view and are outfitted with pairs of salvaged oversized clear-finished wooden barn-slider doors that lend character and visual warmth. A new exterior deck off the kitchen addition leads to a new enlarged backyard patio that is also accessible from the new full basement directly below the addition. Not evident from the street, the parti for this new home is a sweeping arc of glass which forms an expansive panorama of a wooded river valley beyond in the rear. The lot is located in an established and planned neighborhood, which is adjacent to a heavily forested metropark. The house is comprised of two levels; the primary living areas are located on the main level including the master bedroom suite. Additional living and entertaining areas are located below with access to the lower level outdoor living spaces. The large floor-to-ceiling curtain of glass and open floor plan allow all main living spaces access to views and light while affording privacy where required, primarily along the sides of the property. Kitchen and eating areas include a large floating island which allows for meal preparation while entertaining, and the many large retracting glass doors allow for easy flow to the outdoor spaces. The exterior materials were chosen for durability and minimal maintenance, including ultra- compact porcelain, stone, synthetic stucco, cement siding, stained fir roof underhangs and exterior ceilings. Lighting is downplayed with special fixtures where important areas are highlighted. The fireplace wall has a hidden door to the master suite veneered in concrete panels. The kitchen is sleek with hidden appliances behind full-height (responsibly harvested) rosewood veneer panels. Interiors include a soft muted palette with minimalist fixtures and details. Careful attention was given to the variable ceiling heights throughout, for example in the foyer and dining room. The foyer area is raised and expressed as the large porcelain clad element of the entrance, and becomes a defining part of the composition of the façade from the street.

This 1960s split-level home desperately needed a change - not bigger space, just better. We removed the walls between the kitchen, living, and dining rooms to create a large open concept space that still allows a clear definition of space, while offering sight lines between spaces and functions. Homeowners preferred an open U-shape kitchen rather than an island to keep kids out of the cooking area during meal-prep, while offering easy access to the refrigerator and pantry. Green glass tile, granite countertops, shaker cabinets, and rustic reclaimed wood accents highlight the unique character of the home and family. The mix of farmhouse, contemporary and industrial styles make this house their ideal home. Outside, new lap siding with white trim, and an accent of shake shingles under the gable. The new red door provides a much needed pop of color. Landscaping was updated with a new brick paver and stone front stoop, walk, and landscaping wall.
