- An existing spare room was used to create a sewing room. By creating a contemporary and very functional design we also created organization and enough space to spread out and work on projects. An existing closet was outfitted with cedar lining to organize and store all fabric. We centrally located the client’s sewing machine with a cut-out in the countertop for hydraulic lift hardware. Extra deep work surface and lots of space on either side was provided with knee space below the whole area. The peninsula with soft edges is easy to work around while sitting down or standing. Storage for large items was provided in deep base drawers and for small items in easily accessible small drawers along the backsplash. Wall units project proud of shallower shelving to create visual interest and variations in depth for functional storage. Peg board on the walls is for hanging storage of threads (easily visible) and cork board on the backsplash. Backsplash lighting was included for the work area. We chose a Chemsurf laminate countertop for durability and the white colour was chosen so as to not interfere/ distract from true fabric and thread colours. Simple cabinetry with slab doors include recessed round metal hardware, so fabric does not snag. Finally, we chose a feminine colour scheme. Donna Griffith Photography

This property was transformed from an 1870s YMCA summer camp into an eclectic family home, built to last for generations. Space was made for a growing family by excavating the slope beneath and raising the ceilings above. This project shows how a small room can become a functional yet stylish home office. Finding the right size desk for its use and space is very important. We added shelving units for great storage and a place to showcase beautiful items, as well as a pull-out couch which provides a seating area or an extra bed for guests to sleep in. Whether you work from home or need a study space to get things done out of hours, finding room in the house for a home office makes for a valuable addition to many homes. Having an eclectic home office can seem like the best of both worlds, but it’s important to keep in mind that this should be a productive space that keeps out the many distractions of home. You may not have the luxury of a dedicated room to turn into your eclectic office room or home library, so choose your space wisely to ensure privacy and adequate storage. A carefully designed corner in your living room or an alcove can be made into a productive and stylish study space. Your home office furniture with the desk in the centre of your design, needs to include both work surface space and storage ideas – never underestimate how quickly a computer desk can become cluttered with stationery and box files.
