The upper-level sunroom as photographed under the blue light of a winter sunset. The faceted pattern of slender windows and columns is accentuated by soffit lights while the conical shaped cathedral ceiling floats above. The clients have stated that they spend more time in this room, during their waking hours, than any other room in the home! Photographer: Craig Cernek

In recreating the sleeping porch style fashioned from over a century ago, this remodel takes on an updated, contemporary flare. The side additions were built out of steel due to the desire for expansive windows and a limited amount of solid walls. Aluminum framed glass panels encase the additions on three sides. A full screen accompanies each glass door.

EZE-Breeze windows allow for this screen porch to be transformed into a cozy sunroom on cool days, with a sunlight-filled, enclosed outdoor living space. A tall gable roof line with large fixed windows will bring in more than ample sunlight, creating both a bright and warm outdoor room. On warm days, these windows can be opened to about 75% of the size of the screened openings to allow cooling air to flow through.

The owners wished to reconfigure the downstairs of their property to create a space which truly connects with their garden. The result is a contemporary take on the classic conservatory. This steel and glass rear extension combines with a side extension to create a light, bright interior space which is as much a part of the garden as it is the house. Using solar control glass and opening roof lights, the space allows for good natural ventilation moderating the temperature during the summer months. A new bedroom will also be added in a mansard roof extension.

Breakfast in style in this glamorous first floor conservatory. Floor standing speakers provide superb audio quality. Blinds lower and raise at the touch of a button, and can be integrated to activate when the overhanging light is switched on. homas Alexander
