A fire set the stage for this intervention on an old family home. Set on 200 acres of Vineyard, all that was salvageable was the old gable roofed above the bedrooms and the riverrock hearth. We began with the gable and combined it with a series of sloped and flat planes. The new roof forms provide for clerestory windows that bring abundant natural light to the space. A flat, wooden ceiling over the living area continues outside seamlessly housing the surrounding porch. The long flat eave opens the view across the vineyard, to the coastal range and provides the ideal location for an integrated solar array. Bands of salvaged cedar at the base of the house support climbing wisteria, binding the house to the landscape as it rises from the vine rows. Photos: Ken Gutmaker

The WorksThe Works
This turn-of-the-century original Sellwood Library was transformed into an amazing Portland home for it's New York transplants. Custom woodworking and shelving transformed this room into a warm living space. Leaded glass windows and doors and dark stained wood floors add to the eclectic mix of original craftsmanship and modern influences. Lincoln Barbour

Two proportioned book shelves flank either side of this updated fireplace. Their graceful arches echo the relief patterns on the tile façade. This simple but elegant update has provided cabinetry for concealed storage and open shelving where the owner proudly displays their favorite novels, travel mementos, and family heirlooms, adding a touch of personal narrative to the space.

The design narrative focused on natural materials using a calm colour scheme inspired by Nordic living. The use of dark walnut wood across the floors and with kitchen units made the kitchen flow with the living space well and blend in rather than stand out. The Verde Alpi marble used on the worktops, the island and the bespoke fireplace surrounds complements the dark wooden kitchen units as well as the copper boiling tap and ovens, serving as a nod to nature and connecting the space with the outside. The same shade of Little Greene paint has been used throughout the house to bring continuity, even on the living room ceiling to close the space in and make it cosy. The hallway mural called Scoop by Hovia added the finishing touch to reflect the originally aimed grandeur of the traditional Victorian townhouse.
