This remodel of a mid century gem is located in the town of Lincoln, MA a hot bed of modernist homes inspired by Gropius’ own house built nearby in the 1940’s. By the time the house was built, modernism had evolved from the Gropius era, to incorporate the rural vibe of Lincoln with spectacular exposed wooden beams and deep overhangs. The design rejects the traditional New England house with its enclosing wall and inward posture. The low pitched roofs, open floor plan, and large windows openings connect the house to nature to make the most of its rural setting. The bathroom floor and walls are white Thassos marble. We added a hidden shower niche on the knee wall of the shower enclosure to store most of the bottles. We also strategically placed the shower faucet on this half wall so the homeowner could stand outside the shower to turn the water on and let the water warm up- as opposed to entering the shower, turning the water on and quickly existing without getting wet.

Design objectives for this primary bathroom remodel included: Removing a dated corner shower and deck-mounted tub, creating more storage space, reworking the water closet entry, adding dual vanities and a curbless shower with tub to capture the view.

We removed the tub, and relocated the entrance to the walk in closet to the bedroom to enable increasing the size of the shower for 2 people. We added a bench and large wall to wall niche that tied into the accent tiles and quartz slabs on the shower walls. The valves for the shower heads are located on the inside of each ponywall for easy access prior to entering the shower. The door to the water closet was relocated and replaced with a barn door. New cabinets with a storage tower, quartz countertops and new plumbing and light fixtures complete the new design. Added features include radiant heated floors and water purifying system.
