Cet ancien cabinet d’avocat dans le quartier du carré d’or, laissé à l’abandon, avait besoin d’attention. Notre intervention a consisté en une réorganisation complète afin de créer un appartement familial avec un décor épuré et contemplatif qui fasse appel à tous nos sens. Nous avons souhaité mettre en valeur les éléments de l’architecture classique de l’immeuble, en y ajoutant une atmosphère minimaliste et apaisante. En très mauvais état, une rénovation lourde et structurelle a été nécessaire, comprenant la totalité du plancher, des reprises en sous-œuvre, la création de points d’eau et d’évacuations. Les espaces de vie, relèvent d’un savant jeu d’organisation permettant d’obtenir des perspectives multiples. Le grand hall d’entrée a été réduit, au profit d’un toilette singulier, hors du temps, tapissé de fleurs et d’un nez de cloison faisant office de frontière avec la grande pièce de vie. Le grand placard d’entrée comprenant la buanderie a été réalisé en bois de noyer par nos artisans menuisiers. Celle-ci a été délimitée au sol par du terrazzo blanc Carrara et de fines baguettes en laiton. La grande pièce de vie est désormais le cœur de l’appartement. Pour y arriver, nous avons dû réunir quatre pièces et un couloir pour créer un triple séjour, comprenant cuisine, salle à manger et salon. La cuisine a été organisée autour d’un grand îlot mêlant du quartzite Taj Mahal et du bois de noyer. Dans la majestueuse salle à manger, la cheminée en marbre a été effacée au profit d’un mur en arrondi et d’une fenêtre qui illumine l’espace. Côté salon a été créé une alcôve derrière le canapé pour y intégrer une bibliothèque. L’ensemble est posé sur un parquet en chêne pointe de Hongris 38° spécialement fabriqué pour cet appartement. Nos artisans staffeurs ont réalisés avec détails l’ensemble des corniches et cimaises de l’appartement, remettant en valeur l’aspect bourgeois. Un peu à l’écart, la chambre des enfants intègre un lit superposé dans l’alcôve tapissée d’une nature joueuse où les écureuils se donnent à cœur joie dans une partie de cache-cache sauvage. Pour pénétrer dans la suite parentale, il faut tout d’abord longer la douche qui se veut audacieuse avec un carrelage zellige vert bouteille et un receveur noir. De plus, le dressing en chêne cloisonne la chambre de la douche. De son côté, le bureau a pris la place de l’ancien archivage, et le vert Thé de Chine recouvrant murs et plafond, contraste avec la tapisserie feuillage pour se plonger dans cette parenthèse de douceur.

This remodel was for a family that wanted a contemporary style kitchen with a mix of modern and traditional elements. To bring in the traditional, we installed hardwood flooring in grey and brown tones and Shaker style cabinets but updated them in a grey-brown color for the perimeter and a navy blue for the island. The cabinet hardware is a bronze color with a modern design-bar pulls instead of knobs for all cabinets and drawers. To emulate the color of the cabinet hardware, the island pendants are a bronze wire fixture in addition to the bronze brackets holding up the wine rack display. The countertops are a marble design quartz and the appliances are stainless steel. The backsplash on the stove wall is a contemporary linen-like tile installed in a chevron design and the coffee bar area is also a linen-like tile but in an abstract design. There is a walnut shelf above the quartz countertops to bring in some warmth and rustic elements to the area. For a more contemporary feel, we left the HVAC exposed but painted it white as well as the traditional wooden beams. Nothing like taking an old farmhouse that you've lived in for 40+ years and creating a beauty that will take you into your next 40 years. This house got a new addition to accommodate a new kitchen on the ground floor and in the basement as well. The old kitchen cabinets were medium oak and to keep consistency they chose to use same wood in their new kitchen. Adding countertops that have a marbled background with grays and pinpoints of charcoal, Cambria Fairbourne quartz countertops provide a peaceful presence that is calming and soothing.

Of course you might be constricted by space, but try to envisage the easiest and most efficient layout based on how you usually like to cook and prepare your food. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Whilst a large kitchen pantry is the dream of most homeowners, it can’t always be a reality. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Rails or small shelves along your kitchen walls or splashback can help with hanging utensils or pans, or storing small items like herbs and spices in an usually empty space. Are there small kitchen ideas for small spaces?

If you’re working with a galley kitchen, a one-wall kitchen in an open plan space or just a pretty small kitchen, there are some small kitchen ideas that can help you get the most out of your cooking and dining area. If you find that you don’t utilise the back of your cupboards (maybe they become the graveyard for out-of-date tin cans), you could decide to go with shallower kitchen units to free up some extra floor space in front of your cabinets. However, if you have the capacity for it, cupboards and kitchen units that maximise the floor-to-ceiling space you have will mean you can use all of that for valuable kitchen storage. Wall or ceiling racks could be a useful solution for hanging pans and pots if you’ve run out of cupboards in which to store them. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space.
