Completed on a small budget, this hard working kitchen refused to compromise on style. The upper and lower perimeter cabinets, sink and countertops are all from IKEA. The vintage schoolhouse pendant lights over the island were an eBay score, and the pendant over the sink is from Restoration Hardware. The BAKERY letters were made custom, and the vintage metal bar stools were an antique store find, as were many of the accessories used in this space. Oh, and in case you were wondering, that refrigerator was a DIY project compiled of nothing more than a circa 1970 fridge, beadboard, moulding, and some fencing hardware found at a local hardware store.

APEX received the Gold 2017 Minnesota Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award for Additions up to $250,000 for this St. Paul, MN project. The new kitchen in the 1912 home features restored vintage appliances and fixtures, custom cabinetry and table, and custom-cut commercial tile floor. Modern conveniences cleverly hidden. This small studio has everything! It includes apartment size small white appliances, stunning colors (Diamond Cloud Gray cabinets), and great storage solutions! This rustic cabin is located on the beautiful Lake Martin in Alexander City, Alabama. It was constructed in the 1950's by Roy Latimer. The cabin was one of the first 3 to be built on the lake and offers amazing views overlooking one of the largest lakes in Alabama. The cabin's latest renovation was to the quaint little kitchen. The new tall cabinets with an elegant green play off the colors of the heart pine walls and ceiling. If you could only see the view from this kitchen window!

I love working with clients that have ideas that I have been waiting to bring to life. All of the owner requests were things I had been wanting to try in an Oasis model. The table and seating area in the circle window bump out that normally had a bar spanning the window; the round tub with the rounded tiled wall instead of a typical angled corner shower; an extended loft making a big semi circle window possible that follows the already curved roof. These were all ideas that I just loved and was happy to figure out. I love how different each unit can turn out to fit someones personality. The Oasis model is known for its giant round window and shower bump-out as well as 3 roof sections (one of which is curved). The Oasis is built on an 8x24' trailer. We build these tiny homes on the Big Island of Hawaii and ship them throughout the Hawaiian Islands.

Photography by: Amy Birrer This lovely beach cabin was completely remodeled to add more space and make it a bit more functional. Many vintage pieces were reused in keeping with the vintage of the space. We carved out new space in this beach cabin kitchen, bathroom and laundry area that was nonexistent in the previous layout. The original drainboard sink and gas range were incorporated into the new design as well as the reused door on the small reach-in pantry. The white tile countertop is trimmed in nautical rope detail and the backsplash incorporates subtle elements from the sea framed in beach glass colors. The client even chose light fixtures reminiscent of bulkhead lamps. The bathroom doubles as a laundry area and is painted in blue and white with the same cream painted cabinets and countetop tile as the kitchen. We used a slightly different backsplash and glass pattern here and classic plumbing fixtures.

However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Rails or small shelves along your kitchen walls or splashback can help with hanging utensils or pans, or storing small items like herbs and spices in an usually empty space.
