This kitchen was designed by Bilotta senior designer, Randy O’Kane, CKD with (and for) interior designer Blair Harris. The apartment is located in a turn-of-the-20th-century Manhattan brownstone and the kitchen (which was originally at the back of the apartment) was relocated to the front in order to gain more light in the heart of the home. Blair really wanted the cabinets to be a dark blue color and opted for Farrow & Ball’s “Railings”. In order to make sure the space wasn’t too dark, Randy suggested open shelves in natural walnut vs. traditional wall cabinets along the back wall. She complemented this with white crackled ceramic tiles and strips of LED lights hidden under the shelves, illuminating the space even more. The cabinets are Bilotta’s private label line, the Bilotta Collection, in a 1” thick, Shaker-style door with walnut interiors. The flooring is oak in a herringbone pattern and the countertops are Vermont soapstone. The apron-style sink is also made of soapstone and is integrated with the countertop. Blair opted for the trending unlacquered brass hardware from Rejuvenation’s “Massey” collection which beautifully accents the blue cabinetry and is then repeated on both the “Chagny” Lacanche range and the bridge-style Waterworks faucet. The space was designed in such a way as to use the island to separate the primary cooking space from the living and dining areas. The island could be used for enjoying a less formal meal or as a plating area to pass food into the dining area.

Designed and built by Terramor Homes in Raleigh, NC. The kitchen cabinets were consciously chosen in classic farmhouse style. Pure white and designed to reach the ceiling, clean and simple inset doors with simple classic chrome hardware pulls make for an impressive statement. Soapstone was used on the perimeter, offering the aged traditional look you would find in a classic farm home. However, the island was topped with a slightly more modern white granite with beautiful gray movement to add interest and a hard, reliable prep surface. The island measures an impressive 7 feet by 10 feet, matches the same clean lines, but was custom painted in a deep grayed turquoise to make a statement. It serves 6 seats for everyday eating and conversation and also allows for full functionality while still enjoying all the activity and views surrounding anyone who is spending time the kitchen workspace. This kitchen is reflective of the period style of our clients' home and accentuates their entertaining lifestyle. White, beaded inset, shaker style cabinetry provides the space with traditional elements. The central island houses a fireclay, apron front sink, and satin nickel faucet, soap pump, and vacuum disposal switch. The island is constructed of Pennsylvania cherry and features integral wainscot paneling and hand-turned legs. The narrow space that was originally the butler's pantry is now a spacious bar area that features white, shaker style cabinetry with antique restoration glass inserts and blue painted interiors, a Rohl faucet, and a Linkasink copper sink. The range area is a major feature of the kitchen due to its mantle style hood, handcrafted tile backsplash set in a herringbone pattern, and decorative tile feature over the cooking surface. The honed Belgium bluestone countertops contrast against the lighter elements in the kitchen, and the reclaimed, white and red oak flooring provides warmth to the space. Commercial grade appliances were installed, including a Wolf Professional Series range, a Meile steam oven, and a Meile refrigerator with fully integrated, wood panels. A cottage style window located next to the range allows access to the exterior herb garden, and the removal of a laundry and storage closet created space for a casual dining area.

We knew that the idea of a semi-open floor plan would be ideal for our family. Space saving solutions started with the design of a banquet in the kitchen. The banquet’s focal point is the two stained glass windows on either end that help to capture daylight from the adjoining spaces. Material selections for the kitchen were driven by the desire for a bright, casual and uncomplicated look. The plan began with 3 large windows centered over a white farmhouse sink and overlooking the backyard. A large island acts as the kitchen’s work center and rounds out seating options in the room. White inset cabinetry is offset with a mix of materials including soapstone, cherry butcher block, stainless appliances, oak flooring and rustic white tiles that rise to the ceiling creating a dramatic backdrop for an arched range hood. Multiple mullioned glass doors keep the kitchen open, bright and airy. A palette of grayish greens and blues throughout the house helps to meld the white kitchen and trim detail with existing furnishings. In-cabinet lighting as well as task and undercabinet lighting complements the recessed can lights and help to complete the light and airy look of the space. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? How many cupboards and drawers do you need? Do you need extra kitchen storage built into your units? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Of course, grey kitchens are the neutral colour choice du jour and can be paired with pale and rich shades alike if you want your fitted kitchen cupboards to contrast with your worktop, splashback, floor, or all of the above. Exposed shelving and storage is also popular for eclectic, Scandi and industrial-inspired looks, so you could opt for glass-fronted cabinets or no wall-mounted cabinets at all. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage.
