By keeping the cabinetry around the perimeter of the room in Dove Grey, gave the room a crisp, light feel to it but we wanted to add some depth and the contrast of the island is Charcoal gave us exactly that. The space flows effortlessly from kitchen to garden, perfect for BBQ's in the summer evenings. The positioning of the bar stools on the island works well not only for casual socialising but also just enjoying a coffee in this fabulous new space overlooking the garden.

Set within an airy contemporary extension to a lovely Georgian home, the Siatama Kitchen is our most ambitious project to date. The client, a master cook who taught English in Siatama, Japan, wanted a space that spliced together her love of Japanese detailing with a sophisticated Scandinavian approach to wood. At the centre of the deisgn is a large island, made in solid british elm, and topped with a set of lined drawers for utensils, cutlery and chefs knifes. The 4-post legs of the island conform to the 寸 (pronounced ‘sun’), an ancient Japanese measurement equal to 3cm. An undulating chevron detail articulates the lower drawers in the island, and an open-framed end, with wood worktop, provides a space for casual dining and homework. A full height pantry, with sliding doors with diagonally-wired glass, and an integrated american-style fridge freezer, give acres of storage space and allow for clutter to be shut away. A plant shelf above the pantry brings the space to life, making the most of the high ceilings and light in this lovely room.

Davonport Holkham shaker-style cabinetry with exposed butt hinges was chosen for a classic look and its smaller proportions in this Victorian country kitchen. Hand painted in a beautiful light stone (Slate 11 – from Paint & Paper Library) and heritage green (Farrow & Ball’s studio green), the colour scheme provides the perfect canvas for the antique-effect brushed brass accessories. A traditional style white porcelain butler sink with brass taps is positioned in front of the large sash window, providing a stylish focal point when you enter the room. Then at the heart of the kitchen is a freestanding-style island (topped with the same white quartz worktop as the rest of the room). Designed with plenty of storage in the way of cupboards and drawers (as well as breakfast bar seating for 2), it acts as a prep table that is positioned in easy reach of the professional quality Miele induction hob and ovens. These elements help nod to the heritage of the classic country kitchen that would have originally been found in the property. Out of the main cooking zone, but in close proximity to seating on the island, a breakfast cupboard/drinks cabinet houses all of Mr Edward’s coffee gadgets at worktop level. Above, several shelves finished with opulent mirrored glass and back-lit lights showcase the couples’ selection of fine cut glassware. This creates a real wow feature in the evening and can be seen from the couples’ large round walnut dining table which is positioned with views of the English-country garden. The overall style of the kitchen is classic, with a very welcoming and homely feel. It incorporates pieces of charming antique furniture with the clean lines of the hand painted Davonport cabinets marrying the old and the new.

For the island, we added hidden cupboard space under the seating area, for the seldom used items. Also, incorporating a drawer with a double plug and USB point. Hiding unsightly cables with the ease of charging at the same time. To complement the curved island top, we mirrored this on the ceiling to enhance a softness to the design. To eradicate the need of an overhead extractor fan, we used a Bora Pure recirculation extractor hob. The optimal airflow offers reduced noise when used and all odours are immediately captured at surface height. Perfect when entertaining.

This bespoke family kitchen was part of the renovation of a period home in Frome. The ground floor is a half basement and struggled with dark rooms and a layout that did not function well for family life. New windows were added to the adjoining dining room and crisp white finishes and clever lighting have transformed the space. Bespoke cabinets maximised the limited head height and corner space. Designed in a classic shaker style and painted in Hopper by Little Greene with classic burnished brass ironmongery, it is a timeless design.

You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Rails or small shelves along your kitchen walls or splashback can help with hanging utensils or pans, or storing small items like herbs and spices in an usually empty space. If you’re working with a galley kitchen, a one-wall kitchen in an open plan space or just a pretty small kitchen, there are some small kitchen ideas that can help you get the most out of your cooking and dining area. If you find that you don’t utilise the back of your cupboards (maybe they become the graveyard for out-of-date tin cans), you could decide to go with shallower kitchen units to free up some extra floor space in front of your cabinets. However, if you have the capacity for it, cupboards and kitchen units that maximise the floor-to-ceiling space you have will mean you can use all of that for valuable kitchen storage. Wall or ceiling racks could be a useful solution for hanging pans and pots if you’ve run out of cupboards in which to store them. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space. Kitchen appliances like a fridge or dishwasher can be tucked away in built-in units in fitted kitchens so they blend into your layout and don’t make the space look crowded.
