We worked with the clients on this grade II listed Tudor Manor house project to create a huge open plan kitchen and dining area as well as a second apartment kitchen in a separate wing. and designed, manufactured and installed cabinetry for other rooms including the study, master bathroom and dressing rooms. For us, this project is the epitome of classic English design. Originally four smaller rooms, we worked with the clients and the architectural team to re-configure the space to comprise this large open plan kitchen with space for a large 10 seater dining table and soft seating area. The Longford cabinetry doors in this kitchen really suit the traditional English look and feel of the property while the Portobello dark oak finish on the island and cabinetry interiors quietly reflects the heritage of this historic home and works perfectly with the neutral colour palette from the bespoke H|M paint atelier. Fourteen sperate kitchen cupboards were used to build this bespoke island with two full width breakfast bars joined to make a giant 'L' shape design. Extra tall kitchen cupboards extend to over 3m in height and provide ample space for the obligatory Miele stainless steel appliances. An antique French oak rustic kitchen table completes the look whilst 30 LED spot lights provide near on daylight to the space.

This Midcentury Modern Home was originally built in 1964. and was completely over-hauled and a seriously major renovation! We transformed 5 rooms into 1 great room and raised the ceiling by removing all the attic space. Initially, we wanted to keep the original terrazzo flooring throughout the house, but unfortunately we could not bring it back to life. This house is a 3200 sq. foot one story. We are still renovating, since this is my house...I will keep the pictures updated as we progress!

The kitchen runs from front to back of this large family house, with windows to three sides making it extremely light and bright. There is a run of units down each side of the room with a large rectangular island in the centre, emphasising the clean lines and linearity of the space. The cabinetry in a combination of grey oak veneer and cream gloss lacquer adds contrast in both colour and texture. The cream gloss lacquer on the cupboard doors also reflects the abundant light, as does the bronze mirror above the upstands. The linearity of the room is further emphasised by the strong vertical and horizontal divisions formed by the burnished metal plinths and golas. The cooking appliances form a horizontal row to one side of the kitchen where they are housed within columns, echoing the island. The island has a stone work top in off white, and vertical stone strips that contrast with the grey oak of the cabinets. The hob and downdraft extractor are sited on the island, with a bespoke frosted glass breakfast table at one end. The difference in height of this table breaks up the angularity of the design. On the opposite wall there is another line of base and wall units and the sink. Here, the wall units are set onto wooden back boards, which again emphasise the linearity of the design. Between the wooden backboards and the 300mm stone upstands, bronze mirrors reflecting even more light.

However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. If you’re working with a galley kitchen, a one-wall kitchen in an open plan space or just a pretty small kitchen, there are some small kitchen ideas that can help you get the most out of your cooking and dining area.
