The owner's of this Mid-Century Modern home in north Seattle were interested in developing a master plan for remodeling the kitchen, family room, master closet, and deck as well as the downstairs basement for a library, den, and office space.
Once they had a good idea of the overall plan, they set about to take on the priority project, the kitchen, family room and deck. Shown are the master plan images for the entire house and the finished photos of the work that was completed.

We layed out this kitchen with as much separation as possible between the sink/washing area and cooking/prep area. Lots of custom storage solutions like drawers that hold dishes, spices and knives. We tried to mimimize the amount of walking and bumping into each other by having everything well thought out and located. The new 9' window brings in a ton of light & air and a view of the great backyard. We did natural cherry to blend in with the rest of the house's original gum wood moldings & doors.

This 1950s home was sporting elements of the original kitchen and the dark space was not meeting our client’s needs. The original kitchen didn’t have much to offer in the way of functionality, so our first order of business was to create a design that would exponentially increase the usability of the kitchen. We brought in functional cabinetry, introduced uninterrupted work surfaces, and added plenty of lighting to brighten up their kitchen. They also wanted to open the new kitchen to the living room and create space for a larger dining table, so we started by removing the existing cabinetry that was visually cut the living space in two and minimized the power of the dramatic vaulted ceiling. We also extended the wood flooring into the kitchen as well to create seamless transitions between spaces. We fell in love with the idea of a two-toned cabinetry design for this kitchen and ultimately went head over heels for clean white painted base cabinets and a textured wood-look melamine on the uppers. This gave us a crisp backdrop that allowed us to bring is fun forms like the black light fixture over the table and the gorgeous silhouettes on the hardware. We played a lot with directionality in this space. The elongated open shelves and rectangular backsplash tiles give us wonderfully clean horizontal lines, but to balance those out we brought in a vertical grain pattern on the wall cabinets and added long black cabinetry pulls that emphasize the verticality of the space. The clients have a green thumb and wanted to make sure we created a home for their growing plant collection. The open shelving gives us plenty of opportunities for foliage and to showcase fun kitchen accessories. This design feels like home and brings together the clean lines and crisp finishes our clients were looking for.

The open concept Great Room includes the Kitchen, Breakfast, Dining, and Living spaces. The dining room is visually and physically separated by built-in shelves and a coffered ceiling. Windows and french doors open from this space into the adjacent Sunroom. The wood cabinets and trim detail present throughout the rest of the home are highlighted here, brightened by the many windows, with views to the lush back yard. The large island features a pull-out marble prep table for baking, and the counter is home to the grocery pass-through to the Mudroom / Butler's Pantry.

In late 2017, our clients came to us wanting to update the kitchen in their mid-century modern home. The kitchen was not a large kitchen and all the available space needed to be utilized for storage, while achieving the aesthetic our clients wanted.
Walnut cabinetry with flat panels were selected to keep the look clean, modern, but true to the time period of the house. I designed a large pantry area in the dining nook for extra storage and included a built-in microwave to ensure no countertop space was being used for this large appliance. Our clients wanted some open shelving to display items to the right of the sink.
Stainless steel appliances and undermount sink were chosen to complete the clean modern look. Quartz countertops and tile backsplash with red tiles from Iran were incorporated to complete the space and make it truly unique.
The new owners of Corvallis Custom Kitchens and Baths completed this project I designed in 2018. Fantastic attention to detail and craftsmanship!

There’s nothing as wonderful as walking into a mid-century gem with clients who love the character of their new home. Our goal for this project was to incorporate the mid-century bones of this home into a new design that would better meet the contemporary needs of our clients. We started by taking down the walls that had separated this kitchen from the rest of the home and creating a welcoming space that blended seamlessly with the new open concept. The new kitchen design was a win for our clients with increased storage, more work surfaces, and a peninsula with plenty of seating. We utilized wood finishes through out this space with light wood flooring, medium-tones on the cabinetry, and darker wood accents throughout giving us a beautiful balance and a calm backdrop. This home had beautiful horizontal lines that we wanted to accentuate, so we selected a dark wood finish for the central beam and tied it in with the dark finish on the wood fireplace mantel and the stair handrail to emphasize the horizontal features. But we never miss an opportunity for a fun mid-century pop, and this home provided plenty of inspiration! The boomerang hardware on the cabinets and escher backsplash tiles give us great geometric elements to break up the clean lines of the rest of the space. One of our favorite features of this home was the original plaster ceilings with the custom hand troweled texture. We knew from the beginning that this was an element we wanted to maintain and accentuate, so when we opened up the kitchen and added recessed lighting we reached out to a local plaster artisan to carry the texture throughout the space, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. This design brings together the mid-century aesthetics of clean lines and fun patterns with the modern-day functionality our clients were looking for in their new kitchen.

The previous kitchen was the result of an 80's remodel, complete with dropped ceiling. We opened up the space and re-configured the entire kitchen to include a large island.
The cabinetry is all custom. Double oven and range from Miele. SubZero fridge. The backsplash tile is from Heath Ceramics in LA. The Velux skylights are operable and have solar-powered shades.

Hyland Homes
This gorgeous, Chicago townhouse had so many mid century features, but needed an update in the kitchen, two full baths, and fireplace. Hyland Homes designed and remodeled by not only bringing in touches of mid century, but modern and elevated the style that would continue to be "in" for so many years to come!
