The kitchen was designed to give a real wow factor. A dramatic 3.7m long central island wrapped in statement dove grey frosted glass was installed and under lit with LED strips. The island houses the double sink, with waste disposer, water softener, pop up sockets, induction hob with downdraft extractor and a breakfast bar at one end. An impressive bank of tall units sits against the back wall with 2 ovens, microwave, steam oven and a large wine fridge. At one end there are pocket doors that fold back to reveal, toaster, mixer and all paraphernalia that usually clutter the worktop. This small penthouse apartment was given a wonderful nook space by creating a half moon glass bar height table perched above the cooktop island, supported with standoffs and a custom 'cigarette' base of wenge veneer. This is not your typical glass counter top. Cast Glass Images has a custom glass application that they call their "Bubble Fusion Series". It is a custom fused glass technique that incorporates tiny air bubble inclusions. Standard and custom colors are available. The color featured is "Crystal Clear" even though it looks like a white countertop. Cast Glass Images also provided the custom hardware and custom lighting for this kitchen counter top. Glass counter tops provide a sleek, sophisticated look to any kitchen!

These homeowners like to entertain and wanted their kitchen and dining room to become one larger open space. To achieve that feel, an 8-foot-high wall that closed off the dining room from the kitchen was removed. By designing the layout in a large “L” shape and adding an island, the room now functions quite well for informal entertaining. There are two focal points of this new space – the kitchen island and the contemporary style fireplace. Granite, wood, stainless steel and glass are combined to make the two-tiered island into a piece of art and the dimensional fireplace façade adds interest to the soft seating area. A unique wine cabinet was designed to show off their large wine collection. Stainless steel tip-up doors in the wall cabinets tie into the finish of the new appliances and asymmetrical legs on the island. A large screen TV that can be viewed from both the soft seating area, as well as the kitchen island was a must for these sports fans.

You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

When picking out kitchen units and cupboard styles for a fitted kitchen, you’ll first want to consider the more practical questions – how many units do you need? It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh.
