This project presented very unique challenges: the customer wanted to "open" the kitchen to the living room so that the room could be inclusive, while not losing the vital pantry space. The solution was to remove the former load bearing wall and pantry and build a custom island so the profile of the doors and drawers seamlessly matched with the current kitchen. Additionally, we had to locate the granite for the island to match the existing countertops. The results are, well, incredible!

By removing the peninsula island and creating space for a seated banquette, we were able to custom design and a curved mahogany island and curved bench to offset the straight dramatic dark lines of the main kitchen. With gold metallic tile and the new Litze Faucet in split finish of gold and black, we think drama in the kitchen looks fabulous indeed!

This Kitchen was designed by Nicole in our Windham showroom. This kitchen remodel features Cabico Essence Cabinets with Maple wood Tobio door style (recessed panel) and Mexico (dark brown) stain finish. This remodel also features LG Viatera quartz countertop with Aria color and standard edge. The floor is an Alterna 12x 24 blanched mists from their Historical District collection. Their backsplash is 3 x12 mist from their element collection with lighter pewter grout color. Other features include Kohler stainless steel sink and faucet and Amerock stainless steel bar handles.

The existing kitchen was a good size with many amenities but was outdated in style and color. Along with opening the walls, the clients sought a much lighter and brighter feel. A large island and custom doggie station were also on their wish list (check and check!) Custom white cabinetry, fresh white paint on the ceiling, LED can lighting, decorative pendant lights, and a light colored granite counter tops all contribute to a much brighter room when compared to the dark red walls of the original kitchen. Removing the peninsula and extending the back wall to the garage hallway provided some additional square footage. Our talented designers were also able to match the engineered hardwood floorings from the original formal living room and extend it into the kitchen, adding to the larger feel and flowing floor plan. Prior to this major kitchen remodel, the space was very dark and crowded, and did not function in a way that worked for our customers. The kitchen was completely gutted, flooring and soffits were removed, and all electrical in the kitchen reworked and brought up to code. The customers enjoy large family gatherings, so it was very important for them to have a portable island that could also be secured with brakes.

Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh.
