Kenilworth Avenue

Our clients for this project are a professional couple with a young family approached Granit to help with extending and improving their Wimbledon home. The brief set out to strike a balance between old and new, retaining the existing well proportioned Victorian reception rooms whilst creating new open plan flexible living/dining space. This carefully considered approach resulted in a better layout for modern living, creating a long term family home. Maximising natural light into the new rooms was another key consideration as well as improving the connection to the garden. Granit proposed a lightweight glazed side extension to create a large airy light filled space for cooking, dining and enjoyment of the garden. Dropping the floor to the new space served to mediate the levels of the existing house with those of the garden allowing better access. The dropped floor also allowed for a playful series of level changes internally integrating the new with the old and creating a dramatic double height dining space, this allowed the refurbishment of the existing lower ground into a light playroom/home office. The property is situated in a conservation area, meaning careful consideration was given to the appearance of the extension. Exposed London stock brickwork was used internally to highlight the new double height space and to contrast the lightweight glazed roof covering it. Steel framed glazing was used to create a more modern feel and to the new open plan space.
