Grain Bin Experiment
Grain Bin Experiment

A derivation/evolution of the first prototype and grain bin experiment. Unfortunately the effort stopped short of the logical conclusion which would use less materials and take less time to erect. It would not sell for as much. I'll get around to it sooner or later.

This house is built near the water and is within the flood zone. the house is elevated on concrete columns and the entire house is built out of poured in place concrete. Surrounded by large stands of old growth trees, the site’s topography and high ridge location was very challenging to the architects on the project – Phil Kean and David Stone – of Phil Kean Designs Group. Skilled arborists were brought in to protect the Sycamore, Basswood, Oak and yellow Poplar trees and surrounding woodland. The owner, Ken LaRoe is a conservationist who wanted to preserve the nearby trees and create an energy-efficient house with a small carbon footprint. Photography by: Kevin Meechan

Photography by Braden Gunem Project by Studio H:T principal in charge Brad Tomecek (now with Tomecek Studio Architecture). This project questions the need for excessive space and challenges occupants to be efficient. Two shipping containers saddlebag a taller common space that connects local rock outcroppings to the expansive mountain ridge views. The containers house sleeping and work functions while the center space provides entry, dining, living and a loft above. The loft deck invites easy camping as the platform bed rolls between interior and exterior. The project is planned to be off-the-grid using solar orientation, passive cooling, green roofs, pellet stove heating and photovoltaics to create electricity.
