Desiring something more unique than carpeted stairs, an old crate stairway was created out of craft paint, some stencils and a little creativity. The paint went directly on the original wood, creating a very believable effect that the stairs were really derived from chunks of old crates. The reaction from visitors is always most entertaining. :)

A customer asked if I could design some understairs pull out storage. Birch ply carcasses were made with a painted MR MDF, panelled fascia. The sliders were 90kg shelf runners which gave full extension of 700mm.

This is the landing at the top of the stairs in the Mud and Wood House, complete with child stair-gate made from hazel. A large roof-light allows light to pour down into the space. The glass blocks (on the right hand side of the photo) connect into the Sunset Lounge, allowing the glorious colours of sunset to stream into the stairwell. The central tree trunk was provided by the photographer, Steve Rogers, when its roots had become unstable and it was in danger of landing on his house. Photo: Steve Rogers
