A Garden for Orphaned Plants and Found Objects: The leftover space between the home's entry and detached garage has been transformed into an eclectic garden of plants and odd objects. Purposefully designed as a 'stage set' for the client's 'finds', it is not too perfect! It invites the client to experiment with plants and accommodates constant change without destroying the design.

While most trees are fire defensive, Eucalyptus trees like these are an exception. Similarly, a second structure on the property poses proximate fire danger to the home. The Catalina Cherry hedge serves as a barrier to embers that may be generated by either ignite, and the patio offers ample, safe space for fire fighters to work. As outdoor comforts are often flammable, the owners store the cushions on the dining chairs when they are not in use.

As for finishing touches, we added a trellis wall for privacy beside the smoker and built a “more private” privacy wall beside the hot tub and swim spa. Swim spa? Yes! The homeowners moved to Dripping Springs from a home with a much larger lot that included an inground pool. They love this home and its location in the Texas Hill Country so much they were willing to trade their old pool for a swim spa.

We updated the outdoor furniture we purchased at an auction house with bright colours and fun chinese lanterns. The bamboo walls added a fun element to an otherwise boring wall. The neighbours planted bamboo which I love since it adds a level of privacy to the garden.

We used cedar for this substantial pergola that’s designed to provide ample shade with a Polygal cover to filter out the sun’s harsh UV rays. The Polygal material we used has thermal properties, too, so it will absorb some of the heat beaming down from above. Because the pergola cover is clear, you barely notice it’s there.

Transformation of a Blank Wall: The view from the Master Bedroom is peaceful yet engaging, expanding the interior space. The tracery of vines creates a textural background for attaching a wide variety of orchids and air plants. Each plant was brought in from the client's former residence or 'adopted' from friends who were moving. Other found objects such as the driftwood and garden fairies have been given new homes in the tableau.

TRELLISES WITH WIRE RAILING TO MEET CODE REQUIREMENTS act as guardrails for the elevated terrace. TRELLISES MODELED AFTER BARN DOORS are mounted on the stucco wall to support climbing vines.
