This home is fun, innovative and makes good use of its site and immediate environment. Gilleaindreas is modest in size, articulate in proportion and geometry and is extremely energy efficient. A definite award contender and a proven lifestyle enhancer for the wonderful young family who reside here. Photography by Matthew Mallet

Featured in the May 2012 Marin AIA Home Tour, this 4,000 sf. remodeled hillside home was designed to improve the curb appeal of the exterior while the majority of the work focused on opening up the interior spaces to the views beyond. The new façade glows with a shimmering new standing seam metal roof, chimney cap and aluminum and sandblasted glass garage door. The entry has a new stone floor; walnut and sandblasted glass french doors and subtle lighting highlight new planting areas. Photo Credit: John Sutton Photography

This 2,300-square-foot contemporary ranch is perched on a lake bluff preparing for take-off. The house is composed of three wing-like metal roofs, stucco walls, concrete floors, a two-story library, a screen porch and lots and lots of glass. The primary airfoil reflects the slope of the bluff and the single story extends the ground plane created by the pine-bow canopy. Translucency and spatial extension were the cornerstones of the design of this very open plan. george heinrich

A further exploration in small scale living, this project was designed with the explicit idea that quality is better than quantity, and further, that the best way to have a small footprint is to literally have a small footprint. The project takes advantage of its small size to allow the use of higher quality and more advanced construction systems and materials while maintaining on overall modest cost point. Extensive use of properly oriented glazing connects the interior spaces to the landscape and provides a peaceful, quiet, and fine living environment.

The exterior of the home was designed with limited maintenance in mind. On the top of the home is a DaVinci polymer roofing system, which is maintenance free, and we installed a stucco exterior. The windows are Loewen with a clad factory installed brick mold. The only maintenance item on the house would be the stained soffit and fascia, wood garage doors and Ipe Decking. This detached Victorian house was extended to accommodate the needs of a young family with three small children. The programme was organized into two distinctive structures: the larger and higher volume is placed at the back of the house to face the garden and make the best use of the south orientation and to accommodate a large Family Room open to the new Kitchen. A longer and thinner volume, only 1.15m wide, stands to the western side of the house and accommodates a Toilet, a Utility and a dining booth facing the Family Room. All the functions that are housed in the secondary volume have direct access either from the original house or the rear extension, thus generating a hierarchy of served and servant volumes, a relationship that is homogeneous to that between the house and the extension. The timber structures, while distinctive in their proportions, are connected by a shallow volume that doubles as a bench to create an architectural continuum and to emphasize the effect of a secondary volume wrapped around a primary one. While the extension makes use of a modern idiom, so that it is clearly distinguished from the original house and so that the history of its development becomes immediately apparent, the size of the red cedar cladding boards, left untreated to allow a natural silvering process, matches that of the Victorian brickwork to bind house and extension together. As the budget did not make possible the use a bespoke profile, an off-the-shelf board was selected and further grooved at mid point to recreate the brick pattern of the façade. A tall and slender pivoting door, positioned at the boundary between the original house and the new intervention, allows a direct view of the garden from the front of the house and facilitates an innovative relationship with the outside.
