The new entry hall interior. An existing mid-century ranch was given a new lease on life with a whole house remodel and addition. An existing sunken living room had the floor raised and the front entry was relocated to make room for a complete master suite. The roof/ceiling over the entry and stair was raised with multiple clerestory lights introducing light into the center of the home. Finally, a compartmentalized existing layout was converted to an open plan with the kitchen/dining/living areas sharing a common area at the back of the home.

When walking in the front door you see straight through to the expansive views- we wanted to lean into this feature with our design and create a space that draws you in and ushers you to the light filled heart of the home. We introduced deep shades on the walls and a whitewashed flooring to set the tone for the contrast utilized throughout. A personal favorite- The client’s owned a fantastic piece of art featuring David Bowie that we used as inspiration for the color palette throughout the entire home, so hanging it at the entry and introducing you to the vibes of this home from your first foot in the door was a no brainer.

Request Free Quote The festive holiday season requires more than just traditional trimmings. Adornments are best selected to compliment the individual home’s architectural style; in this case classic lighting, a hanging doorway wreath and colorful planters all combine to create a memorable classic threshold.

Significant Additions to a Georgian Revival House: The original house was constructed by a sea captain and many of the details are a nod to nautical details fabricated by shipwrights. The new owners wanted to improve the internal circulation and interior proportions of the house. The front entry and family room addition respond to near and distance views of the surrounding landscape and the historic Hobart Gap. The side French doors open onto a private garden and serpentine wall referencing the historical gardens of the Lawn at University of Virginia, where the owner attend.

This hallway also doubles as a mudroom and entry area. The terra-cotta hydro-radiant floor and the tall wainscot provide tough finishes. Photo by Joanne Tall
