This young family began working with us after struggling with their previous contractor. They were over budget and not achieving what they really needed with the addition they were proposing. Rather than extend the existing footprint of their house as had been suggested, we proposed completely changing the orientation of their separate kitchen, living room, dining room, and sunroom and opening it all up to an open floor plan. By changing the configuration of doors and windows to better suit the new layout and sight lines, we were able to improve the views of their beautiful backyard and increase the natural light allowed into the spaces. We raised the floor in the sunroom to allow for a level cohesive floor throughout the areas. Their extended kitchen now has a nice sitting area within the kitchen to allow for conversation with friends and family during meal prep and entertaining. The sitting area opens to a full dining room with built in buffet and hutch that functions as a serving station. Conscious thought was given that all “permanent” selections such as cabinetry and countertops were designed to suit the masses, with a splash of this homeowner’s individual style in the double herringbone soft gray tile of the backsplash, the mitred edge of the island countertop, and the mixture of metals in the plumbing and lighting fixtures. Careful consideration was given to the function of each cabinet and organization and storage was maximized. This family is now able to entertain their extended family with seating for 18 and not only enjoy entertaining in a space that feels open and inviting, but also enjoy sitting down as a family for the simple pleasure of supper together.

The design choices of Casa Piet Mondrian are born with the aim of giving flexible answers to the different needs of generations and lifestyles of its inhabitants. Without giving a too sophisticated or too dry tone, the insertion of iconic design elements and bespoke elements in canaletto walnut embraces all the spaces that wind along a path where the architectural box leaves space outside and to the interior without ever overlying them. The result is an apartment that plays on the contrasts between elegance and freshness, between colors and materials, between minimal furnishings and bespoke elements. At the entrance, a double living room is divided between the conversation area that develops around the fireplace and the TV area, where custom joinery elements combine together with the textures of the upholstery and carpets to warm the environment. A band of color collects the lounge and leads up to the dining room divided but united by the adjacent environment by a custom element with open elements. The fully custom-made kitchen is made of black walnut and FENIX and houses a corner dedicated to breakfast and quick meals. Along the corridor leading to the sleeping area, there is a study corner that anticipates the design of the bedrooms. The two bedrooms of the boys play on a characterizing color in the middle of the wall which is reproduced in the carpentry elements of the bathrooms and in some details of the study desks. The master bedroom maintains the same philosophy with a warm color scheme as a backdrop for Scandinavian-style furnishings and elements contrasted by furnishings with more complex and elegant lines and padded with woven and precious fabrics.

Situated on the north shore of Birch Point this high-performance beach home enjoys a view across Boundary Bay to White Rock, BC and the BC Coastal Range beyond. Designed for indoor, outdoor living the many decks, patios, porches, outdoor fireplace, and firepit welcome friends and family to gather outside regardless of the weather. From a high-performance perspective this home was built to and certified by the Department of Energy’s Zero Energy Ready Home program and the EnergyStar program. In fact, an independent testing/rating agency was able to show that the home will only use 53% of the energy of a typical new home, all while being more comfortable and healthier. As with all high-performance homes we find a sweet spot that returns an excellent, comfortable, healthy home to the owners, while also producing a building that minimizes its environmental footprint. Modern fixtures mixed with traditional elements elevate this stunning neutral dining room. Leather upholstered chairs for practical dining needs. __ We had so much fun designing in this Spanish meets beach style with wonderful clients who travel the world with their 3 sons. The clients had excellent taste and ideas they brought to the table, and were always open to Jamie's suggestions that seemed wildly out of the box at the time. The end result was a stunning mix of traditional, Meditteranean, and updated coastal that reflected the many facets of the clients. The bar area downstairs is a sports lover's dream, while the bright and beachy formal living room upstairs is perfect for book club meetings. One of the son's personal photography is tastefully framed and lines the hallway, and custom art also ensures this home is uniquely and divinely designed just for this lovely family. __ Design by Eden LA Interiors Photo by Kim Pritchard Photography
