Handmade and painted Malibu Tile around the mirrors, limestone counters, arches over bathtub reflected in mirror. Old world spanish home. Malibu Tile is dominant in this luxury home overlooking the Ojai Valley. Exposed beam ceilings of old scraped wood, trusses with planked ceilings and wrought iron stair cases with tiled risers. Arches are everywhere, from the master bath to the bedroom bed niches to the carved wood doors. Thick plaster walls with deep niches and thick window sills give a cool look to this old Spanish home in the warm, dry climate. Wrought iron lighting and limestone floors, along with gold leaf walls and murals. Project Location: Ojai, California. Project designed by Maraya Interior Design. From their beautiful resort town of Ojai, they serve clients in Montecito, Hope Ranch, Malibu, Westlake and Calabasas, across the tri-county areas of Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles, south to Hidden Hills- north through Solvang and more. photos by Pedro Marti The main goal of this renovation was to improve the overall flow of this one bedroom. The existing layout consisted of too much unusable circulation space and poorly laid out storage located at the entry of the apartment. The existing kitchen was an antiquated, small enclosed space. The main design solution was to remove the long entry hall by opening the kitchen to create one large open space that interacted with the main living room. A new focal point was created in the space by adding a long linear element of floating shelves with a workspace below opposite the kitchen running from the entry to the living space. Visually the apartment is tied together by using the same material for various elements throughout. Grey oak is used for the custom kitchen cabinetry, the floating shelves and desk, and to clad the entry walls. Custom light grey acid etched glass is used for the upper kitchen cabinets, the drawer fronts below the desk, and the tall closet doors at the entry. In the kitchen black granite countertops wrap around terminating with a raised dining surface open to the living room. The black counters are mirrored with a soft black acid etched backsplash that helps the kitchen feel larger as they create the illusion of receding. The existing floors of the apartment were stained a dark ebony and complimented by the new dark metallic porcelain tiled kitchen floor. In the bathroom the tub was replaced with an open shower. Brown limestone floors flow straight from the bathroom into the shower with out a curb, European style. The walls are tiled with a large format light blue glass.

The clients wanted a refresh on their master suite while keeping the majority of the plumbing in the same space. Keeping the shower were it was we simply removed some minimal walls at their master shower area which created a larger, more dramatic, and very functional master wellness retreat. The new space features a expansive showering area, as well as two furniture sink vanity, and seated makeup area. A serene color palette and a variety of textures gives this bathroom a spa-like vibe and the dusty blue highlights repeated in glass accent tiles, delicate wallpaper and customized blue tub.

This luxurious spa like master bath is essentially and indoor outdoor room. The limestone floors and shower tower keep this space cool in this warm tropical paradise on the Big Island of Hawaii. I was inspired by the intersection where sand meets water for the vanity. Soft light wood with the grain on the horizontal meets a 6" glass counter. The weight of this glass is supported by steel reinforcements throughout the back wall. The irregular rectangle shaped glass mosaic in the shower was applied vertically so the lines of the grout follow the drops of water...like a tropical storm. From the shower one can walk directly to the private garden behind the master hale. Susan Schippmann for Scavullo Design
