Without sounding over dramatic, a life without my house plants to me would take away the little humanity left in my crazy life ... where having lost my house with a lovely garden due a divorce, my life is just work, home (in a small flat in a very noisy road) sleep, repeat or so it seems. Plants are relaxing and beautiful but more importantly remind us that being close to nature is one way to keep sane and connected to what is real in our lives.

As the article points out, when I was a student in the mid-70s, we all had a Swiss cheese plant, a spider plant and a fern. The more affluent might also have a weeping fig. Basically because they were affordable and we were living in rented accommodation so this was the only way to personalise our space. I still have these, but have added a couple of self-grown citrus and of course an avocado. Nothing new under the sun, as they say.

This baby boomer has plants, green and/or flowering all over the house. Nice antidote to a climate that is cold, snowy and gray for almost 6 months! Rochester,NY.
