What Have Houzz Users Been Doing at Home During Lockdown?
We asked homeowners how they’ve been spending time at home and whether the pandemic affected their renovation plans
We asked Houzz users these and other questions in a recent survey to find out how everyone has been spending their time during this unprecedented pause in our lives.
The homeowners we surveyed have been busy making their homes look and feel calm, clean and organised. More than half of the respondents said they’ve been decluttering and organising, and 51% have been cleaning and tidying.
The kitchen has been one of the most-used rooms, with 50% of those we surveyed saying they’d been spending a lot of time cooking and baking.
30% of the Houzz users we spoke to have been busy with their hobbies, while other things that have kept homeowners occupied include engaging with online content (25%), working from home (25%), and spending time with other members of the household (20%).
Almost half of the people we surveyed had a project planned at the beginning of the pandemic, but of those, only 2% have cancelled it completely. A determined 46% said they’d just put their job on hold, and 42% were able to continue with their renovation.
Half of those who cancelled or delayed their project said it wasn’t urgent and could wait until it was safe to continue. Availability of products and materials was another factor, with
34% saying they’d delayed or cancelled because they couldn’t obtain supplies, while 17% cited a lack of finances as the reason for putting the project on hold.
Digital technology has been invaluable for so many things during lockdown – connecting with loved ones and homeschooling spring to mind – and, according to Houzz users, tech has helped with renovating.
We asked homeowners what was the most handy thing for continuing a project during the pandemic, and around 44% said it was the ability to purchase products online.
A number of Houzz users were able to use tech to work with professionals, too, with 20% finding remote communication tools useful and another 20% appreciating the use of online invoicing tools.

This period has no doubt prompted many people to look at their space more closely, so we wondered if there was anything that could make being at home more enjoyable.
For 30% of those we surveyed, an upgrade of their outdoor space would be beneficial, while 25% would like to transform their kitchen. Other rooms in our Houzz users’ sights are the living room (20%) and the bedroom (18%).
But would these makeover plans be realised? Well, 23% of homeowners said they’re likely to update their outdoor space, while 20% are planning to redesign their kitchen. The next rooms in line for an actual transformation are the living room (15%) and the bedroom (13%).
