Trending Now: 8 Outbuildings to Escape To
See the most popular new sheds, backyard cottages and greenhouses on Houzz so far this year
Here are the eight most popular outbuilding photos added to Houzz from January through March 2017, measured by the number of people who saved these images to their ideabooks in that period. Which one would you like to escape to?
8. Shaker shed. This garden shed in the backyard of an El Segundo, California, home is pretty to look at and offers functional storage.
Inside, it holds a collection of furniture and accent pieces that would come in handy for parties, such as baskets, vases and spare chairs.

7. Quiet and clean. The clean lines of this outbuilding make for a nice contrast to the natural-looking pool and unrestrained feel of the surrounding foliage.
6. Teeny cottage. This outbuilding actually serves as a small cottage, located in the woods of Vashon Island in Washington. The lanterns beside the front door and chandelier inside offer an inviting glow.
“The cottage is set about 200 feet from the main house, at the top of a forest-covered hill,” says photographer Alex Crook, who shot this image. “The heated floors and warm lighting make this hideaway cozy in the winter.”

5. Gingerbread house. This cute wood-storing shed offers a handy feature on its left side: shelves for storing chopped logs, pots or tools.
Rickrack trim gives the shed a gingerbread house look.
4. Natural harmony. The natural materials — wood, glass and stone — of this Atlanta greenhouse harmonize easily with the building’s wooded setting.

3. Stone classic. This outbuilding to a large home in Memphis echoes the main home’s stonework and the slight arcing in the curve of its roof. The homeowners use it as a garden shed and to store wood for the main home’s fireplace, according to the architect.

2. Writer’s retreat. This cottage, a former writer’s studio, was saved from demolition and moved to this property.
“The cottage was the studio for William P.T. Preston Jr., an author and scholar who was renowned for his 1963 book Aliens and Dissenters about government policies that restricted civil liberties,” says John Fuller, the architect who helped renovate it and works there with his wife. “The studio sat on a bluff overlooking the outer harbor and Nantucket Sound beyond.” It was removed to make space for a renovation to that property’s main home.

To remove it from the original lot, the builders cut the framing around the brick fireplace so the structure could be lifted over the chimney and put on a trailer for removal, Fuller says. “We bought the cottage from the building mover sitting on the trailer.”
