Almost everything can be scanned in. Paper doesn't have to be physical. Every year when I do my taxes I go into all the accounts and save every monthly statement, mostly because I then scan them to make a list of all the deductions, but it isn't like they take up real space. A nice multi TB external drive will hold all the records I will ever create plus a whole lot more.

dbparker: I just saw your comment. If you had a tax preparer, they should have your old tax records. Good luck!

As a senior with a husband that has absolutely no computer knowledge, and no desire to learn any, I still continue to receive paper bills, etc. I want to make things easier for him if something happens to me and paper still seems the logical way to do that. What I do is paperclip all paid bills together for a month, then when my next bill arrives I simply shred the previous months so there is no accumulation. We have very few bills these days, and they are all on auto pay, but still nice to retain the previous month's notice. We still continue to receive paper monthly bank statements and investments for the same reason. The ship has sailed as far as him learning how to manage things electronically. Every once in a while I go through home maintenance booklets and recycle any we don't need anymore. We have recently witnessed what a family is going through when a relative did not toss ANYTHING over about 40 years time. This includes bank statements, taxes, utility bills, etc. I'm not sure what this individual was thinking, but it sure has made a mess for his heirs. I do a lot on line as far as managing and accessing investments, etc., but I have a secure place where I have put all our access information to make it easier for our son to access if needed.
