I've never seen a microwave that shallow -- micro/trim kit + air flow requirements usually require 18" minimum depth. I once designed a bar area in a kitchen and we had to push the back of the two wine fridges through the wall into the living room on the other side. There just wasn't room in the kitchen for the full depth of the fridges. We built a sideboard in the living room to hide the backs of the fridges + some storage and display space. Maybe they did something like that here...?

Thank you! We might be doing that with our wine frig actually. Possibly doing a built-in in the dining room that bumps into the hall closet behind it. That way we won't have a 24" deep built-in taking up all that space in the dining room and the closet is big anyway. :) We cannot do it with the microwave in the kitchen since the cabinet walls are all exterior. In our current house we have the microwave in a cabinet in the island, which I love, but that might be a little awkward in the new kitchen and there are fewer lower cabinets overall.

Hi Kelly, No the microwave fit right into the space. It was not nooked or pushed out.
