How to Bring Nature into Your Bathing Space

Use organic materials and colours taken from the great outdoors to soften your bathroom scheme and add natural warmth

Houzz UK Contributor. I have been an interiors journalist since 1995, writing several books on design and numerous features for glossy homes mags over the years. For Houzz, I cover decorating ideas and trends and interview designers and professionals for their insights. My favourite pieces to write, though, are Houzz Tours, as I love exploring and learning about real homes. Call me curious — or nosy!

Bathrooms are practical spaces and this can often dictate the appearance of these functional schemes. With so much water around, and moisture in the atmosphere, durable surfaces that can withstand it all take precedence. But, when used exclusively, they can leave a bathroom feeling rather clinical and cold.

So soften the room by using natural materials for smaller details, rather than the key surfaces. Be inspired by nature and bring organic touches and natural references into the bathroom, adding warmth, texture and lots more character.

Stock up on shells
Soften the look of your bathroom with seaside accessories, such as dried starfish and shells, and give it a relaxed holiday feel. Remember to buy them from reputable and sustainable sources, or gather just a handful on a seaside walk.

Pick up pebbles
Another way to bring the seashore to your bathroom is with pebble-effect floor and wall treatments. Many of these floors are also slip-resistant, which makes them a practical choice in a family bathroom. What’s more, walking on them feels like strolling across a pebbly beach.

Reflect on it
A mirror above a basin is pretty much essential, but why not give it a natural twist? Ditch something sleek and sensible and instead choose one with a twig-encrusted frame to bring lots of warm, woody texture to your space.
LEIVARS
Add a bloom
The natural, varied colours of even a single living bloom will warm up a pale bathroom scheme a treat. We so often save fresh flowers for our more public rooms, but why not grab one flower from a bunch destined for the living room and display it in your bathroom.

Hang a statement shade
Just like the surfaces, lighting in a bathroom can often veer towards the purely practical. But think outside of the box and choose a standout shade made from rich, natural materials. This twiggy design looks amazing and, when the light is switched on, casts sinuous shadows on the walls.

Choose a rustic palette
A background of soft brown with the vivid green of house plants popping out against it creates a comforting and moody woodland scheme. Taking a bath here will feel like dipping into a forest stream!

Go organic
Swerve the familiar metal towel rail and fashion a rustic alternative. If you’re feeling creative, make a towel ladder from branches and twine. Alternatively, buy a wooden towel rail (they are widely available) or prop up a vintage ladder instead.

Work with wood
Bath tubs and basins made of wood are a huge and exciting departure from predictable white ceramic and bring a gorgeous warmth to a bathroom. Wooden tubs also feel beautifully warm and comfortable to use, adding another layer of comfort to a bathing space.

Weave in texture
Soften a bathroom floor with a beautiful woven rug. Check the rug or mat can withstand a high moisture environment first, or simply be sure to ventilate the bathroom well to keep it – and the mat – healthy.

Branch out
Tiny details can turn a cool white bathroom into a quirky and warm space. These charming branch-style hooks are an appealing alternative to standard metal hooks.
