Craft: How to Create a Simple, Handmade Christmas Wreath
With Christmas approaching, it’s time to start thinking about decorations. Try fashioning your own leafy wreath with these simple tips
Wreaths are a Christmas classic and widely available in the shops, but one made at home using sprigs of foliage will bring a crafty, personal mood to your decorations. Follow these simple steps to make your own unique wreath.
Nature provides us with the perfect decorations, so let’s make the most of them. They look chic and are very cheap. This contemporary Christmas wreath is a beautiful example of how you can use nature to decorate – and it doesn’t require you to run around the shops looking for a metal circle to support it. All you need to do is go to your wardrobe and pick out a dry cleaner’s metal hanger.
Materials and tools
- A dry cleaner’s metal hanger
- Scissors
- A hammer
- Some florist’s wire
1 Take a walk in your garden and collect some leafy branches and sprigs, regardless of the type. The ones pictured here are from a hedge. You may want to go for olive or fir branches if you wish to maintain a more traditional look.
2 The shaping of the hanger may seem a little tricky, but it’s actually quite straightforward. Place on a flat surface and pull the bottom of it downwards. Don’t hesitate to use your hammer to help flatten it. Then, by hand, just pull and stretch the hanger. The metal will slowly loosen up, which will result in a smooth circle. It doesn’t need to be perfect, as it will be covered with the branches.
3 After cutting a piece of wire (scissors will be enough, no need for shears), tie a few branches together to create a bundle, while keeping some wire length to attach to the hanger.
4 Place the little bundle on the hanger with the remainder of the wire and wrap it around a few times in order to make it strong and solid.
5 Repeat this again and again while following the curve of the hanger and always going in the same direction.
6 Try not to leave too much space between each bundle in order to hide the hanger beneath.
7 Once the circle is complete, stand back, observe and possibly spread the branches differently to rectify any irregularity. If necessary, use more wire to come up with the perfect look you’re going for.

8 The finished wreath may still feel irregular, but that natural look is its best feature! Thanks to the hook of the hanger, all that’s left to do is find the perfect spot, put a nail in the wall – or use a 3M Command removable hook – and hang your wreath.
One final thing you might want to do is add a last festive detail –possibly a Christmas tree decoration. With the help of a little string, hang it down from the hook. Mission accomplished! A wreath like this is charming, cheap and easy to make… What’s not to love?
