Houzz UK Contributor. I have been an interiors journalist since 1995, writing several books on design and numerous features for glossy homes mags over the years. For Houzz, I cover decorating ideas and trends and interview designers and professionals for their insights. My favourite pieces to write, though, are Houzz Tours, as I love exploring and learning about real homes. Call me curious — or nosy!

We can all be guilty of forgetting about the exterior of our homes. After all, we live in them, not outside them. But for passers-by and near neighbours, the outside of your home is a clue to what lies inside – whether it’s sleek, rustic, tidy or scruffy.
Perhaps the most expressive element of a house’s façade is its front door. A colourful, well-dressed one speaks of a beautiful home beyond and entices visitors in. Treating your door to a fresh colour, or installing a new design altogether, is a great way to lift the appearance of your property and up its kerb appeal.
So ditch the natural wood, dark grey or Number 10 black and be inspired by these colourful examples.

Team bricks with blue
Many red-brick homes have front doors that play safe in simple shades of black, grey or white. But this 1930s house shows how a shot of colour can really brighten up a brick exterior without fighting with all those red tones. The letter box in the wall has been painted the same shade, too, for a smart touch.

Colour surrounding walls
This timber house has a brilliant white front door but set within a painted exterior. The deep blue of the woodwork creates a rich backdrop to the bright white, making it pop out and seem like a statement shade.

Keep it contemporary
Exciting modern architecture deserves a door with equal amounts of confidence and flair. Bright orange is just the ticket and looks fresh against grey clad walls and a stained cedar fence.

Set a light note
This house extends the light, bright feel of the interior all the way out with a brightly painted door. Its fresh chartreuse colour seems to match the abundant sunlight that floods this home, inside and out.

Ignore tradition
A trad suburban home gets an injection of fun via a bright orange front door. It sits as a playful contrast to the planting and brickwork, and promises a welcoming, relaxed environment inside.

Create zingy contrast
Grey cladding is super stylish, but as a neutral backdrop it is crying out to be punctuated with a pop of zesty colour. Here, both doors are painted in lime green, creating a fun accent that doesn’t detract from the smart appearance of the exterior.

Add a border
You don’t need to paint your entire door to create a splash of colour at the front of your home. This door is mainly glass, but its frame has been treated to a warm egg-yolk shade, which helps it to stand out against the surrounding grey cladding.

Brighten a no-frills entry
This is a lovely door in a fairly uninspiring wall. Painting it strong turquoise draws the eye to its pretty design and patterned glass and away from the cramped entry.
