There are some great ideas in here! May we also recommend a fireplace? It can really emphasize space using natural light.

This is very interesting, Sophie. We're buying a waterfront house in Stromness, Orkney, with a pier and a slip. It also has a stone- built bothy in the garden which we want to convert into a studio with mezzanine sleeping accommodation - this and other articles are giving us great ideas. just one thing - I know you're based in London but when you post links to government sites remember that the UK isn't just England and Wales. Perhaps you could respond to this by posting the Scottish equivalent of the UK government planning portal. Maybe you'll also bear in mind the spread of your readership in future articles.

Great comment about removing walls. Plan in advance where your furniture is now going to be placed. A lot of furniture items have quite ugly boards or very thin ply backs. You really don't want these on show from the other side so think carefully. Try and visualise the layout without the wall and decide if it's what you really want to do in terms of furniture, zoning etc. I love open plan by the way but its trickier than furnishing rooms.
